Columbia has Boris Altschuler, so it wins. The rest I ranked in order of general physics reputation and a quick look at their CMT faculty page. Screw experiment.

I'd say UWM is better than brown or dartmouth, worse than columbia, and somewhere around yale or penn.

I would rank Yale slightly above Oral Roberts University and slightly below the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I think Dartmouth's the best because they're the only Ivy I applied to that hasn't rejected me.

UWM's physics department chair is a CMT person, and actually one of the people I'd really like to work with.

UWM is a good program but is not Brown as good as UWM? Their research seem to be fairly similar.
i did not like Coopersmith research. i like Vavilov's research. He is a young Prof from Cornell.

Yeah, Coppersmith. Applications of renormalization to computational complexity makes me all giddy inside. Vavilov's research is awesome too, but my advisor told me he's very Russian. In a way that made me feel he might not be pleasant to work with.

I saw a talk by Coppersmith awhile back. She seems like a very down-to-earth person who would be fun to work with.

will, I am accepted at Wisc-Madison and I am meeting Prof. Vavilov during the openhouse. Why do you think he is very Russian and what does that exactly mean?

It means if he is your advisor you shouldn't expect him to help you very much.

fermiboy, you still have a good shot at berkeley and UIUC. why is UIUC not sending any replies to 700 club as of yet? I hate them all.

EDIT: oh my.. I was thinking of considering him as my potential advisor. I am freaking out now. But Vavilov is very young and has not supervised any students yet. Also he is very active. Anyways, we will see after i meet him during my visit.

The Russians that I've worked with, here at least, have all been exceptionally good physicists. They've also been inordinately demanding, and expect you to be on the same page as them at all times. You need to stop and think about something? Too bad. You should remember that result from 3rd grade physics!

I don't know; I think his research is interesting and I'd gladly meet him before writing him off; I'm just conveying what my advisor told me.

I think any foreigners who want to teach in the American educational system should have to participate in 1 year of training in a class called "Introduction to the American Educational System."

There they will be taught that:

Americans do not learn calculus in grade school.

Americans do not do physics in grade school.

Americans are required to take many NON-science courses.

American education focuses on understanding and not memorization.

will, do you go to school in Madison?

EDIT : I am also meeting Prof. Ericksson's group and Prof.Rzchowski from CM exp.

EDIT : but GRE is the test of memorization. :?

No; I haven't posted where I go to school because we don't have many undergrads and I'd be very easy to identify. My research advisor gives talks there from time to time though.

@ VT

I've heard good things about Ericksson -- I have a prof who collaborates with him. Going to meet with him as well.

We're in the same boat again. Not sure, it's been a while since I did the research. I remember being more interested in the UWM research, and UWM certainly has more groups to choose from.

yes, dlenmn, I saw you were accepted from Brown. Now, I am only waiting from UIUC and UCSD. Do you have any idea if UCSD send offers in two rounds or something?

I've got no inside info, but here's the data from gradcafe (you'd almost think using that site is my passion... scary, no?). It's kind of hard to judge, but there are no records of people getting in during March last year (or after 2/14 for that matter) but that's not the case the previous year. This year, people got in on 2/19. Not sure what it all means.
