FALL 2008 rejections
I'd feel really shitty if I got rejected somewhere I didn't apply to. Can you imagine getting that letter? Our high school guidance counselors would say that we we've already been rejected from everywhere we didn't apply to.
"Dear twistor,
It is our understanding that you have not applied to our school. We are writing to inform you not to bother. In the case that you would have applied you would have been rejected and we would have wasted valuable time shredding your application. Furthermore, several of our professors would have had to be restrained due to violent fits of laughter. We commend you for not putting us through this horrible ordeal by graciously not submitting your application. We look forward to you not applying again next year.
Sincerely,
The faculty and staff of MIT"

Up till now we're almost sure any news would be good news.....
Now those of us who haven't heard from anywhere can despair.
Better luck with your other applications marten.
May Garden save us all...
(I've become a bit religious the past days. I wonder if I should start sacrifices in the name of the Wise One. )

Thanks schandre. It was a bit disappointing to have my first decision be a rejection, and to get it so soon. Ironic that I had a dream 2 nights before about getting an acceptance email from UMBC, but turned out to be a rejection from UMich.
But UMich was my reach-reach school, so it really isn't a huge surprise. Considering I don't have a physics degree, I'm preparing myself to not get accepted anywhere and I have backup plans. However, I spent a lot of effort preparing for the GRE, not to mention time and money applying, so it'd be really nice to not face that scenario.
Good luck to everyone still waiting for their first decision.

Marten,
I wouldn't worry too much about that first rejection.
The same thing happened to me, my first letter was a rejection from UW Seattle, and really early (01/23!!) which was very depressing.
But soon thereafter I got accepted to Penn State and CU Boulder which definitely made me feel much better.
By the way, these are all in Astro.

Interestingly, I had a dream a couple of weeks earlier that I got accepted to Boulder, so I'll be curious to know how UMBC turns out for ya...I had a dream 2 nights before about getting an acceptance email from UMBC

Yale rejection!
Rejected from Yale online 02/13 (1/2 so far, 9 more waiting).
Haha, in my dream I was looking at my yahoo inbox (egh, switching to gmail....) and I couldn't quite read what the email said, my monitor was fuzzy, and I was trying to squint, but there was so much spam everywhere, it was hard to tell for sure if I was accepted or not.Interestingly, I had a dream a couple of weeks earlier that I got accepted to Boulder, so I'll be curious to know how UMBC turns out for ya...

i don't see anything about 'decisions'...did you get an email or something telling you about a status change?
if I look at the application home, the closest thing I can find is "check your application status" on the bottom left corner. and that link just says "deadline has passed" and has some paragraph about making sure apps are complete...blahblah..

For me, I am an international with not so impressive GRE., but what I do not understand is why the hell they rejected you. I mean, Yale is ranked 14th acc US News. Forget it. U will get into Berkley or UIUC, fermiboy. They are big departments. But I do not understand why you did not apply to UCSD. they accepted 140 students last year. you shud have def applied their. Anyways, it is just the begining and GOOD LUCK.

rejected from Berkeley asronomy
Their e-mail was funny; as if they actually care about me or my future. I would have a lot more respect for them if they ended their e-mail by saying they let in 9 of 145 aplicants. The rest of their bull *** is just demeaning.
Also, I must agree with RG, a big *** YOU to ETS.

RG,fermiboy and others. sorry to hear about Yale... you all have amazing records, it's pretty surprising that Yale is being so snotty. I applied to Applied Physics, so I'm guessing they haven't release the first casualties there.
RG, condensed matter theory right? Goldbart is at UIUC, you're so much better off there than Yale. If you come to the April visit day, maybe I will see you there.
