PHD admissions

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

shouravv, thank you for posting that information.

I just wanted to say that in my case, I respond the same to anyone who comes on this forum and asks us very broad and general questions about what they need to do and where they need to apply whether they are foreign or not. It takes hours of research to answer these questions, and the answer are specific to each person. I happily field specific questions that I have an opinion on, but I'm not going to do hours of research to give this guy a list of schools he should apply to, and that is what he has essentially asked for, even though I'm sure he doesn't realize it.

@gre313:

You could have posted just that (reply above) for the first post. You had time to put a smile face and then again, you have time to defend that you're not racial.

shouravv,

So you're calling people on this board racist and/or xenophobes because we don't want to research grad programs for others? We all did the research on our own, the data on grad programs is all over the damn interwebs, all of us found it, so why can't others?

Maybe if people came on here and said "here are my stats, these are the programs I looked at, here's the data I found, etc." THEN said "any suggestions, pointers, blah blah," then I think board members would be more open to giving advice.

What a lot of these people are doing is equivalent to going to the math tutor lab and asking for help on integrating a function. The tutor says "show me what you've done so far and where are you stuck?" Reply: "I haven't tried it yet, can't you just tell me the answer?"

This is the same sort of thing sekharsrinadhu is doing, and that's why he/she get's a hostile response, NOT because of his/her nationality. A domestic student would get the same response.

@fermiboy: I agree with you that none of us are responsible to help this first poster's concern. He is being much too general to be helped in a meaningful way. But certainly, it is not nice to laugh at him. If you don't want to help, that's fine. Just go on your way.

But certainly, there are way to help if you want to. Just by telling him that he needs to be more specific about his situation and so on.

I am a tutor myself and I understand how frustrating it is when unprepared student is eager to get an answer out of homework problem. But as a tutor, I at least ask "show me what you got so far" rather then just smile and leave.

i'm a xenophobe, i can't help it, i hate it when the prof/TA's accent is so thick that I cant understand what he or she is saying. They should make the TOEFL harder because so many people at my school can't or won't speak English to other people.

but please don't call people racists when you have no proof.

I wonder why you decided to apply to the US grad schools. ahhhhh, I get it. US accent is similar to that of yours, right? This means you are not a xenophobe but an accentophobe, cool ok people we have a new disease( may be I shud call a hip) in the market now called accentophobe!
Enjoy the new disease. It is a hip to have such a disease. so take your chance too.

"This is more of a pacing test than knowledge test, so focus more on practicing than depth of materials."

You suggested that person to take it in April, then again in October.... I had the impression that taking the Physics GRE only once (and doing well that one time) is better than taking it twice (you gotta admit, if you bomb it once and do well the second time it is kinda risky). Or am I wrong? Taking it twice and doing worse the 2nd time is bad, I assume.

I have the chance to take it in April, but several professors have advised me to take it next October rather than April. I plan to do well so I'm not going to take it in April, see how I do, and then take it in October. That's just telling yourself that you can wing it the first time and _then_ study for the final time. Is my logic faulty? Thanks everyone,

yeah, I was actually waiting when Grae would post something hilarious. This was all for fun. I am an international myself.

What pissed me off was vicente xenophobic attitude.

I do not think shorav was calling anybody xenophobe or racist. He was only being sarcastic( also he is new poster and does not know that quiz, tnoveill, grae and myself were just kiddin, nothing serious). Fermiboy got heated up, and then vicente walked in with his xenophobic grandeur.

Okay, first let me come forward and tell you that English is not my native language so it could all be at my fault for not being able to comprehend "not very fond of something" as equivalent to saying "hating something". I'm used to differentiating such so I didn't interpret the quoted sentence as racism. I like to be able to say that I am not fond of cat because I'm a dog person but that certainly doesn't mean I hate or treat cat the way White superior used to treat Black slaves back in slavery time.

Man, I still haven't figure out how to quote from other people's post :x

When you say you're "not very fond of" X and it's a material object like an apple that's fine, but saying it when X is a whole nation of people is something different. Maybe I overreacted but that post just pissed me. Here's the full quote
5. Many people on these threads are not very fond of international / Chinese / Indian students. Don't be discouraged by their behavior. Once you are in the US, you will see that people generally are helpful and understanding.

So people on this board are not helpful and understanding? That's what this quote says to me. I didn't think it was very cool, given that everyone on here as generally tried to support each other.

shouravv,

The OP wasn't even asking a specific question. That's what makes people mad. Then you swoop in and start making sweeping generalizations about many people on this board. That is illogical, in fact there's even a name for that fallacy, it's called a "hasty generalization." Where's your evidence that "many" people on this board are not fond of foreigners? Your lack of logic is not a "feeling," it's blatantly obvious.

If I walked into a crowded room, say a physics seminar, and said, "you know them Chinese, I've never been too fond of them. Don't really like those Indians either." You think that's NOT racist, xenophobic, or intolerant? Wow.

yeah, I don understand why fermiboy is taking it to the diff direction

Neither does the OP nor shouravv knows that Grae has answered such questions several times before.

Also both of these posters are unaware of the fact that quiz. me and other posters leave Grae to answer such general questions and laugh at Grae's response, cuz she keeps answering the same questions again and again and gets pissed finally, and every one does, actually.

So shouravv was only telling the OP that not to come to a conclusion that people from US are xenophobes simply becoz they din ans your question.

So it was neither Grae's NOR shouravv's fault.
It is a fault of a reader who is missing the main point and keep his focus on few details of a sentence.

I'm taking it different direction because everywhere I go people say inane or stupid *** and I'm sick of it. I don't know why that post set me off. Maybe it was overboard to say the dreaded R word, fine I'm sorry.

In fact, I think I have blown a fuse. I decided I don't care who gets in where and that I've been wasting way too much time here. I got in one place, I can do physics somewhere, everything else is just gravy. Good luck everyone.

Before your steel cage death match ensues everyone should take the time to enjoy this bit of nostalgia:

I compiled a list of hypothetical things we could say to piss off our favorite forum members, including you:

@ grae313

Hello Sir,

Does student who wish to purse physics PhD in US need a undergraduate degree in physics!!!!!!
EDIT:

fermiboy: Don't go because of that. Don't waste time being angry over stupid forum bullshit.

I think this argument is the result of some kind of cyber cabin fever. Everyone needs to take a few steps back and relax. Deep breaths. Go back to meatspace for awhile, have a meatball and some meatloaf.

(grae313 note my successful incorporation of "meatspace" into casual language.)

I saw shouravv's post this afternoon and thought #5 was going to cause a stir... Sure enough I got back tonight and saw 40 replies and could only imagine what drama unfolded here today...

I initially didn't think it deserved a response, but now I must say that for someone who only registered the forum 4 days ago and has made 9 posts, Shouravv, you would not recognize some of the harmless inside jokes between the "veteran" users.

We've seen so many cases where someone posts an unreasonable inquiry just like sekharsrinadhu's and it just tickles us a little bit... we have established the convention to let grae313 make the first response to such threads. It's just a coincidence that so many of these users are indian. Another trend is that these users never follow up with their inquiries and ask more guided questions... I bet we'll never hear from sekharsrinadhu again!

As twistor brought up, I even made a post weeks ago where I made my own mock imitation of these posts for laughs... And just a few days ago vineeth comes to town... I thought this was getting so funny and then I wake up this morning, checked the forum... and sekharsrinadhu had me rolling on the floor, and grae313 had already given her 2 cents " "...., hahahahhaha

We need this silliness to keep us going during stressful times...

And fermiboy, please don't go... we've already lost goodfromfar, don't abandon us...

Congrats grae313

butsurigakhushana (sorry for the misspellingn)... Let's compete to see who can last the longest without getting in anywhere...

garden, all hell breaks loose without you... we need another of your cryptic posts to unite us all behind the pursuit of understanding something mysterious...
