RETURN OF GARDEN

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

RETURN OF GARDEN

Post by cancelled20080417 » Wed Jan 30, 2008 2:54 pm

Hello Garden,
You are so welcome to this forum. I am really not trying to be funny at all.

Can you please enlighten us what exactly made you to return to the forum? I think quizivex will be so excited on seeing you back. This is amazing and we appreciate your commeradaerie by returing to this forum. Also, thank you very much for posting you stat.

Since you are already accepted to UIUC and I am waiting to hear from them too, could you please let us know when and how did you hear from them? I will so much appreciate your help.
Thank you again.

WTF IS A SYSOP
I'll field this one. A sysop is a "systems operator." A sysop was the operator of a bulletin board system. Before the internet got into full swing people would direct-dial bulletin boards (usually ANSI based) to exchange files and messages. The bulletin board was typically ran on a home computer system and the person who owned and operated the computer was the sysop.

It could be... but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps I'm too naive and/or gullible, but 10 years of research experience is possible, and I'd expect that if he really wanted to fling BS around, there would be much more impressive ways to do that. I've worked with some real professional BS flingers, and garden doesn't smell like one, or just not a very good one.

Besides, someone could look at my profile and reach the same conclusion, "What? No physics degree? And you're applying to grad schools???"

Maybe we'll never know. Unless someone ends up at UIUC with him. RG, perhaps if you get accepted also, you can go under premise of studying physics, but really your assignment from the physicsgre forum is to get to the bottom of this, and see if we're the victims of a professional BS flinger. Do you accept this assignment?

*this forum will self destruct in 10...9...8...*

Garden is not lying. It's perfectly possible to have 10, 20, or even 30 years of research experience as an undergraduate! I'm sure that my century+ of lab work really helped give me an edge in the competition (see my post in the profile thread).

BEST, GLUON

gluon,
I hate to say this, but I think by editing your stat you are making fun of quizivex's genuine effort to have a well organized online database of grad school applicants.
I would like to request you to pull off the non-sense and make that thread useful and informative to visitors( if you or anybody else including garden do not like to post your stat, it is fine, but please do not post BS and make crap out of it and make fun of others stat. Try NOT to lie yourself, it does not matter whether others are telling the truth or not)

I hope you understand what I am trying to say here. I am sorry for such a blunt post.

I also think it would be better if we do not make fun of that thread. We can post our BS here or on the discussion thread.

yeah well my classes finished at 12 and now I'm waiting for 3pm because that's when we have a department seminar. The person speaking is my girlfriend's boyfriend who is about to get his PhD at stanford, he's talking about Xeon trapping or somesuch nonesense, and it's tradition here to get wasted before a seminar so we're on the third bottle of wine

WHOOAA!!! This is unbelievable. I was out all day yesterday and went to sleep as soon as I got back. I wasn't here to witness the epic drama that unfolded. SO GARDEN HAS RETURNED. Just when we had practically lost faith in his resurrection, he appears out of nowhere with a garbage post and vanishes without a trace.

Actually, just a few days ago I was about to post a new thread called "Petition for the return of garden" and was going to ask the users to post their pleas for garden to come back. When I first saw this thread on the homepage, I thought RG had coincidentally done the same thing until I looked garden up and saw he made a 5th post.

This is so incredible.

We spent weeks on the November 3rd Scores Out thread helplessly trying to interpret his words. We kept calling for a return from garden but were disappointed every day. As RG said:

Garden appearing on this forum is a rare cosmological phenomenon(as quizivex mentioned). So let us be patient and keep our hope alive. One day he is gonna make his way to this forum and enlighten us with deep insight and spell out the meaning of his words! Garden if you read this post, just ignore it, it is not worth reading for a true genius( twistor's idea) like you!

Twistor has always been baffled by garden's genius. In fact, the garden discussion prompted several users to make their first post. All of it was leading up to this day.

The credit for this miracle goes to trupti. Just one day before his return, trupti called out asking that garden post SOP or stats:

Maybe after all the admissions are over and everyone has got admitted to whichever place they wanted to, RG, quizivex, grae313 and garden :) should even post

But I must say along with grae313 that I'm disappointed:

I can't see how anyone could read that and not be over 90% sure it's a load of crap.

That was very clever allusion to his monumental words!

Twistor on the other hand knows that garden is always perfect and always correct, so we must reformulate the way we view ourselves and our world to account for this fact:

No, I think it's more likely that garden's post is true and accurate and everyone else is lying.

And yes I agree with VT,
gluon, please fix your stats. anyone who wants to post a humorous mock profile is welcome to do so but please put it on another thread. We really want to keep the profile thread authentic and reliable.

By the way, thanks to the newbies who have posted their profiles recently! :D

I have walked the sandy plains-mountains of the Eastern desert wetlands in the West. I have journied through many a valley. I have been snowboarding with the Dalai Lama, smoked pot with Jesus, and saved a whale from drowning with Bono at the peak of his career ca. 1989. But I have never in all of my travels encountered a sage as mystic and true as garden.

That is why I propose we start a new religion, the likes of which has not been seen since the advent of that Flying Spaghetti thing.... with garden as our all powerful and supreme and oh so wise leader, englightenment will soon follow, and we will leave the wheel of samsara forever and enter into union with garden.

After entering into this mystic but non-sexual union we will have instant access to all 10 of his years in research experience....

I think you can trace this right back to the fact that it's hip to be lesbian but still taboo to be gay (at least in popular culture). Seriously though, I've never actually said that in meatspace, and I just typed it because it was easier than saying "my friend's boyfriend" and then explaining that my friend was female and not a gay male.

meatspace
lmao

Had I known this word existed before your post, I still couldn't think of a situation where I would be tempted to use it.

Unless it was something like:

"My underwear is roomy and has extra meatspace..."

you just need some time to get used to it. try using it in a sentence, like, "when we are all accepted to our dream school and since we are all super rich, we are all going to get together in meatspace for a party at RGs place before starting gradschool!"

lol...

I just can't...Because I've permanently associated the word "meat" as a slang term for penis. Therefore when meat is used out of context like that, as in the word "meatspace", it brings to mind wild images of the sauna at the YMCA...

Try it:

"I was at in sauna at the YMCA... damn that's a happening meatspace!"

sauna at YMCA = steam room where there is a high density of naked gay men.
