Georgia Tech

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Where did you see the decision. They emailed me saying it will be available but I could not find it.

I "calculated out" it.
Acceptance mail starts with the word "Congratulations!!! bla bla bla..."
Rejection starts with " Thank you for applying to our program.... bla bla bla..."

If one gets accepted, I guess s/he doesn't need to wait till evening in East Coast.

Just got the same email about decision being available later this evening. Don't know why they don't just send the email when the
decision is available.

I got the same email and just found out that I'm admitted. There was nothing in their email that would give the decision away, I guess they just wanted to build up some anticipation...

you don't have to. check the open house dates. the last one is around 5 April. after that most people will decide and decline all but one offers. u'll get to know before 15 Apr.

I will decline as soon as I can, but apparently we have to wait for the official letter from the university (the one we have now is from the department) and then the option to either accept or decline will appear. Hope that helps and they don't keep you waiting until after April 15...

You can decline any time just by sending them an email and saying that you won't attend - that's it!

whats the deal with most waitlists, will they literally replace one person from their acceptances with someone on the waitlist? Or will they just wait until the April 15th deadline comes up to get a better idea of their yield?

It's more intelligent than that. Most schools keep a rough estimate of the number of people that are likely to come, and admit as necessary as time goes on to keep that number close to their target class size.

I can imagine a process where a program might want to admit 20 students and they know that their normal yield is 50% so they might make offers to something like 25-30 students initially. So, it would not necessarily mean that every decline = another accept. I think this is a better way than just making 20 offers because it's "low risk" (schools generally the ability to support a few extra students) and this way, they will get an offer to someone ranked 25th, for example, sooner, before another schools makes that person an offer. The longer a school waits, the deeper into its waitlist it will have to go because the top candidates on their waitlists will probably get offers elsewhere!

Also, a school might choose to admit from its waitlist in a second wave instead of individually. They might have some goals of keeping research groups balanced so they might not want to replace e.g. a CMT candidate with another CMT candidate if it turns out all of the other CMT candidates did accept!
