Hello!
I am having hard time to choose between University of Minnesota vs
University of Florida for CMT. Weather is a factor too! I am scared of cold
Places. Do you guys have any insights into the research comparison or any other things
relevant that might help me to decide. Funding is about the same!
Any response is appreciated!

I've heard gainesville is terrible, and its in a swamp.
I'd take UMinn, but I also like living in the city.

I saw a lot of snakes in Florida on Discovery channeltorch000 wrote:I've heard gainesville is terrible, and its in a swamp.
A prof said U-FL is "not good". Don't know in which context but U-MN has very good reputation.

U of MInnesota is overwhelmingly highly ranked over U of Florida. U of Minnesota is one of the top 30 universities in the world!

I'm finishing up undergrad at U Minnesota in condensed matter and I'll offer my two cents on the place.
The Bad:
- Winters are intense and can last from November through April sometimes. We had snow well into May last year and we had below zero Fahrenheit 53 days this winter according to the DNR.
- U Minn is huge - 50,000 students in total or something. You may not like it if you're used to a small place where you get a lot of attention, although this will be less of a factor since you're going to grad school.
The Good:
- We just finished a brand-new physics and nanotechnology building, exclusively devoted to labs and research. We're basically doubling the size of the the current Nanofabrication Center. This may not be as relevant if you're in theory, but if you decide to go into experiment it's a big deal.
- CMT faculty is quite good and we're expanding with the recent hires of Rafael Fernandes and Fiona Burnell. Our Russians are quite well known and you get access to the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute if you want.
Let me know if you want any other information. Hope this helps!
