Physics related PhDs that don't require the Physics GRE?

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Physics related PhDs that don't require the Physics GRE?

Post by Omnitron310 » Mon Nov 18, 2013 10:55 pm

So, my Physics GRE went disastrously. I can't even remember my exact score, but it was something like 440; around the 5th percentile :( It's completely my fault; I didn't put in nearly enough work, and didn't appreciate how difficult and important it was. I know that I can do much better, but obviously it's now too late for applying for Physics PhDs for the next academic year.

Still, in the interests of making the best of a bad situation, I was wondering what Physics related PhDs there are that don't take into account the Physics GRE (my General GRE was strong by the way: Q - 162, V - 163, still waiting on final results). A friend of mine said that Biophysics does not require the Physics GRE, just the General. Is this true? And are there any other Physics-y subjects like that?

Thank you very much for your help.

Some astronomy programs. Also planetary science programs. But I think it's generally a bad idea to pick a research field based on the fact that you didn't do well on a Physics GRE!
