Average general GRE scores by intended graduate major

The ranking cannot be directly read off, but physics is very clearly #1 overall (highest Q together with mathematics, with higher V and W than any of the other math/science/engineering majors), while philosophy is #1 in verbal and writing. And this is in spite of the fact that the general GRE means little for physics graduate school admissions and the fact that we have a very important subject test to focus on.

Not that this should be counted as evidence that physics is superior; we all know that a priori, and this is merely an empirical manifestation of that metaphysical truth...

Yes, because physicists need extra reasons to be smug and uppity about their choice of field, and the general GRE totally gives them that excuse ;)

Considering the standard deviations, the difference in means are very small, so nothing significant here.

Hah. I bet if there was a portion of the GRE which measured one's ego, physics majors would top that one as well. :P

Economists can inflate their egos by 5% a year. Physicists, by a factor of 10^100 in a nonillionth of a second, and eternally at that.
