Surprise phone calls

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Surprise phone calls

Post by ThatTallGirl » Sat Feb 02, 2013 1:07 pm

Yesterday, I got a call from Yale, at around 4:00 on a Friday, without any warning at all. This woke me up from a nap after a long drive, so when I woke up, let's say my mental clarity wasn't at it's best. They asked me a bit about my research, why I wanted to pursue graduate studies, and why specifically Yale. They then mentioned I had a good application and apologized for catching me off guard. All of this took about 5 minutes.

Has this happened to anyone else? I guess for now I'll just beat myself up mentally...

Would this happen to international applicants? I would be very hesitant to answer international calls since they are very costly :D

Last year, after I got one surprise phone call like that (it was an acceptance notification though but I was really caught off-guard), I decided to not answer any unknown / international phone numbers! They can always leave a message or email :)
