2012 Acceptances

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

I am so nervous about all of this. I'd rather it just be over at this point.

Not technically an acceptance, but I've been invited for interviews at UChicago (biophysics) and Harvard (systems biology).

Btw, has anyone interviewed at Harvard systems biology (or biophysics) before ?

All, go to the post "==> Sticky: 2012 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results" in the second section of the "Prospective Physics Grads" forum. A comprehensive, detailed list of applications and results has already been started.

The reason we like to have a second thread for acceptances is so that people can be notified (via the unread posts icon in this thread) when new acceptances come in. Otherwise you'd have to continually scan the entire profiles thread and have everyone's status memorized in order to tell when new acceptances have come in.

Congrats!! Can't wait til more decisions start rolling in, the anticipation is driving me nuts!

And to all the lurkers out there, please sign up and post your profile on the sticky thread here: http://www.physicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4274

It's an incredibly useful resource!! (And Don't worry if your profile is lackluster in comparison to some of the 990s posted. The average profiles probably tend to be much more needed since that's where most of us are!)

Congrats!! Just wondering -- did they say anything about admitting anyone? I didn't apply to Yale, but I'm just curious whether an invite to visit can happen without an acceptance offer.

Yes, some schools do invite people to visit before acceptances/rejections are sent out. It is a good sign though.

Ah thanks. :)

No - they didn't say anything about that. But it is generally a good sign (they definitely accept over 50% of those who visit).

Just a reminder to everyone posting--it's good form to see you post your profiles in the "2012 Application Profiles and Admission Results" sticky if you haven't done so already. Feel free to leave blank any info you don't feel comfortable showing, but the more you share, the better the resource is for everyone.

Last year, they asked certain people for official transcripts and told them in the email that they were planning on admitting them. It doesn't sound like they told you in the email they are planning on admitting you, but if it's like last year, you have been unofficially admitted.

Accepted 1/18 to UCI as a Chancellor's Fellow- ~22k RA/TA + 10k stipend = ~$32k funding for first 2 years.

Very happy to be able to let out a sigh of relief, but I'm not uncrossing my fingers just yet. :D

Got email from Caltech Geological & Planetary Sciences today (Jan 20). Accepted with a $29k fellowship for first year (no promises on future years, it seems though). They also tried to call. Will have a phone conversation next week to get all the details, and open house is Mar 1-2 this year.

I talked with a professor on the admissions committee for Santa Barbara on skype earlier today - he told me that although the official decisions won't be made until February, that I'm among their top applicants and my acceptance is essentially decided! I'll wait to update my profile until I get the official letter/financial info.

Btw, I'm an international applicant, of overrepresented minority. This should be an encouragement to you guys!

I got an email from UC Irvine asking for Official Transcripts, and saying that they were ready to make an admissions decision this week. Does anyone know if this is a good sign? Or do they just need the transcripts to process my application?

If they don't have a copy, official or unofficial, it doesn't mean anything expect that they want you to complete your app. If they already have unofficial copies and say that those are acceptable for the initial evaluation, then it's usually a good sign.

They already have unofficial, I really hope I get in, it looks like a great program for me. Thank you very much for the input :)

Received an official admissions offer from University of Washington today via email! They say they'll be sending "personalized letters" via email and postal mail soon (so no financial information yet).

Just wondering, do colleges look at your list of applied colleges, decide whether or not you are using them for a back up, then disqualify you based on whether or not you will get into the other places?

No, it's generally just used for statistics. So they can say that their applicants and accepted graduate students come from and apply to places like such and such.

I'd also imagine that there is a small chance that it could result in better offers if they really want you.

After I accepted and rejected offers during my MSc application cycle, each school asked us to fill out a survey for statistical purposes. It was optional but we could explain why we chose to apply, why we chose to accept/reject their school, why we ended up going to where we were going, did we think the funding offered was good enough etc. I think it's better to ask these questions for statistical purposes AFTER the decision, so that we aren't pressured to participate and so that we aren't left wondering whether or not they will really not consider the answers in our applications as promised!

I just got an email today from UCI as well, but it was in regards to sending them my official transcripts from the college I took one summer school course at. they have my official transcripts from my undergrad institution but not this one. hoping this doesnt delay too much/hurt the review of my application.

Also, rejected by Caltech but it doesn't matter anymore.

Maybe its just the anxiety talking  , but do the physics results seem to come out later than most? Watching the gradcafe lists is aggravating. Note, I'm not including: geophysics, astrophysics, physical chemistry, nor biophysics. I spoke to a professor at Caltech and they haven't even begun looking at applications.
