Physics Score April 2011

Post by stephm » Sat May 21, 2011 9:00 pm

I just got back my GRE Physics score, but there seemed to be a discrepancy between the raw score and scaled score.

Eventhough i got a raw score of 58, (which from what I have seen on all recent year papers and based on GRE 1077 where a score of 990 is arround a raw score of 85+,) a 58 should correspond to a scaled score of 800 and percentile in the mid 70's, instead I got 710 and percentile of 57, which usually corresponds to a raw score of 45!
Could anyone else with a similar RAW score to mine let me know if this was also the case with them? ETS has not been helpful at all in the emails and phone calls I gave them. This is really bad because Im waiting a responds to my only application from day to day and if ETS has messed up my score that would be really uncool.

I would be extremely grateful and in debt to anyone that could help me out!!!

If this can help you: I got 88 correct, 10 wrong, 2 omits on this test, and I have 980, percentile 96.

The scores are not universal, as in the results of past tests don't affect this test. Your percentile is based off of the others that took the test as well. So in the past (maybe) a 58 raw put you in the 70's (better than 70 percent of the other testers) but this time around it put you in the 50's. It's all based on how the others around you did.

I understand, but in this test a 990 was 87 instead of 85 as in the GRE 1077, so i take the scaling to be pretty similar, besides the percentile the difference between a raw score 45 and 58 seems a lot bigger which just seems weird

I'm assuming then that the difference is that for this test the scores were more spread out and less concentrated into pockets, so it stepped your scaled score down. The 43% percent higher scoring than you were likely spread pretty evenly along the raw score, so in order to differentiate, the scaled score had to take more steps putting you at 710 and not 800.

Yes that actually does make sense, thank you for clarifying!

but this could maybe not be the case so if there is anyone with a raw score close to that of 58 I would really appreciate to know what their scaled score was.

I also got a 710, 57% but I did not get a 58 raw score. Are you sure you included the questions you got wrong? My "raw" score was a 48. 56 right, 33 wrong, formula 48.

If your formula score is a 58, then your scaled score/percentile are wrong. It would be helpful if you posted your correct, incorrect, omit numbers.

I did notice that this test was "curved" higher than any of the other practice tests. A 48 raw score on other tests could be as high as 65% (and 8% difference).

Yeah Im definately sure my raw score was 58, i got 62 correct and 16 wrong with 12 omits, which gives a raw score of 58. Great thank you so much for claryfying I have to contact ETS immediately about this because my application should get a response from day to day :s , once again thanks so much this could save me!!

I hate to break it to you but I just noticed this. Your numbers don't add up to 100 questions!!!!! There is a serious problem with your score report.

Yeah they do, thats because I mistakenly said i have 12 omits when I had 22 ommits so my point still holds!

62 correct + 16 wrong + 22 ommits = 100 Q's

62 - 16/4 = 58 raw score

Also sorry to be such a pain to everyone, but if anyone knows the fastest way that this could be handled would be truly invaluable to me. The things is both to my email and phone call queries ETS just sent me to the link http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_interp ... scores.pdf that just tells you how to interpret your scores and doesnt even have raw scores!

This is frustrating/nerve racking beyond belief and might cost me my one and only so needed chance to leave the UK which is a place I truly do not want to have to live in ever ever again (im greek).

Anyway some help would be great, and thanks to all who took their time to answer my query!

ETS is so unnecessarily evil some times,

It would also be great if anyone who got or knows what a raw score of 58 would correspond to in terms of a scaled score and percentile could let me know, so I could tell the university I applied to.

You probably won't have much luck right now, its after 8pm on a sunday. You'll have to wait until tomorrow, probably around 8-9am EST.

Interesting post.

The difference in score is probably due to different forms, but the raw score difference is pretty big for this case.

I got 830(raw score 72) which seem to match with stephm's 710(58) and complex's 980(86), but sounds odd in comparison to physguy's 710(48).

me and physguy took the exact same test, the percentile is even identical for 710,
but more importantly complex's score does not fit into mine and your score like you say but perfectly into mine and physguys score. Comparing to 1077 you see that there a 48 corresponds to a 730 (here 710), a 58 tou an 800 (here probably a ~760) and an 86 one point into 990 (here 980), which is an exact 2 point shift below this tests scores for both their scores, i guess maybe you had a different form or the scaling was stricter from 750 - 850.

Not a big sample size but...

October '10
87+ - 990
86 - 980
80 - 910
72 - 830
45 - 620

November '10
80 - 930
(77 - 940)??
75 - 890
69 - 860
68 - 860
58 - 750

My score and complex's score fit the Oct '10 test.
Regardless...you should call up ETS to see if they have anything to say.

Great, thank you for this information lllynx. I called ETS and as usual they where completely unhelpful and understood my request 20 min's into the conversation. It turns out you have to send a letter to the GRE Office at Princeton with a request!

I took the same test as you guys. However, I got a lower scaled score than complex but got a 990, not a 980. It sounds to me like they give out different versions of the test and scale scores differently for each, even on the same day.
