2011 Medical Physics Programs
2011 Medical Physics Programs
Hi everyone,
The other medical physics thread looks a bit old so I thought I'd start a new thread for 2011.
I've applied to medical physics PhD programs at Chicago, Wisconsin, Duke, UT-Houston, SUNY, UCLA, Wayne St, Purdue, Florida, and UT-San Antonio and the masters program at McGill.
So far I've gotten an invitation to interview at UCLA and UT-Houston and a rejection from Duke (but offer to be considered for the MS program).
I would be very interested to hear if people have heard from any of these schools. I'll be sure to update here if/when I hear from other schools.

Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
sry but when you got an email from duke?
Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
I got an email this Friday (1-28) saying: "The admissions committee has finished completing the first round of reviews of the applications for the PhD program. You had a competitive application, but given our limited number of openings, unfortunately, we would not be able to offer you a PhD position. But recognizing the merits of your application, the admission committee wishes to consider your application for our MS program."
So apparently I didn't make it past the "first round."
leedj23, did you also apply to Duke?

Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
I applied for masters and haven't received anything from duke yet..
Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
I also have an interview with Houston and UCLA.
I've heard that UCLA accepts about 10 of the ~20 people they interview. Does anyone know the statistics for Houston?

Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
Congrats pjaetsrp! I hadn't been able to find any stats for Houston yet, but I would be very interested to know.
I also just heard from Wisconsin on Friday (2-4-11) and they said that I "have been recommended for admission to the Medical Physics Graduate Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. If the Graduate School concurs with our decision, you should receive a letter from them, confirming your admission." Does anyone know if the grad school generally agrees with the department? Is this just a formality or should I be worried about not being accepted by the grad school for some reason?

Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
I would think it's just a formality. If you're good enough for the specific department, then I'm sure you're good enough for the school..
Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
I received the email from UPenn in 17th of December saying that the result would be available in 6-8 weeks and actually this week is the 8th week. Is there anyone who's got the similar mail and/or the results from Penn?
Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
I heard back from Wisconsin too, same day. Did they send you an official accept letter or any word about funding?zeebo17 wrote:Congrats pjaetsrp! I hadn't been able to find any stats for Houston yet, but I would be very interested to know.

Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
Wisconsin will generally not guarantee you funding. In fact, they are known to admit many more students than they can fund. You will have to obtain funding from the research group you are interested in working with.HP wrote:I heard back from Wisconsin too, same day. Yes I got a letter and it said: "Although we cannot offer you financial assistance at this time, your file is being circulated among our research groups and we are hopeful that one of them will offer you a research assistantship." How about yours?twistor wrote:Wisconsin will generally not guarantee you funding. In fact, they are known to admit many more students than they can fund. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about contacting potential advisors for funding?
Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
Mine said the same thing, but just received an email today stating that I have been awarded a fellowship.

I was rejected from Duke yesterday.
I'm headed to UCLA this weekend to interview there though so that makes me feel a little better.
Anyone else apply/heard anything from VCU?
Leedj23: congrats on getting admitted to UPenn!
Edit: deleted an extra "though" in 2nd sentence.

I'll be at UCLA this weekend too! I'm interested in Radiation/Proton therapy (adaptive RT and 4D-motion management mostly).
Also, just got accepted to Purdue.

Never was really into medical physics, but I am doing research right now on radiation therapy all be it not at UCLA . I have to admit that is actually very interesting, so good luck and have fun!zeebo17 wrote:I'll be at UCLA this weekend too! Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
Anyone heard of acceptance offers to Houston for PhD?
I applied to PhD programs at..
UT-Houston: interviewed already, haven't heard anything else
Duke: rejected for PhD
Wisconsin: accepted for PhD w/o funding
Wayne State: interview next week
I haven't heard anything from U.Florida, U.Chicago, UT-San Antonio, or VCU.
Last year Houston said they accepted 20 MS/PhD students, but they only plan on taking about 10 this year.. seems like they were planning on taking ~6 PhD students, that was as of the end of Jan so hopefully that number goes up and not down!!! Gettin nervous, lots of physics friends have heard from schools already but medphys seems to be a little slower

Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
Florida has already sent out interviews. You have to pay your own way though.
Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
Accepted to the MS program at McGill on 2-21 and the PhD program at University at Buffalo (SUNY) today.
vballphys- I have heard from others applicants that Florida and Chicago have already interviewed people but I haven't heard from them either. I haven't heard anything from UT-San Antonio yet. I also have an phone/skype interview with Wayne State this week.

Actually no, I hadn't read that . But thanks for the link. I've been keeping track of gradcafe.com but I was only recently introduced to this thread by a friend (I had only used physicsgre.com to help study for pgre). Medphys has always been my top choice and I've relied on contacting professors and students to get a grasp on individual schools, not on hearsay of a website that lends itself to falsified testimonials. However, the link you referenced was very helpful and I'm glad to have read it

Also, for future applicants:
I received an invitation to interview with UCLA in early January and an invitation from Houston in early February. I interviewed with Houston in mid-February and with UCLA in late February. I got acceptances from both of them yesterday. I also received an invitation to interview with Duke in the beginning of February and will be interviewing with them this weekend.

Anyone know approximately how many people will be at Wisconsin's open house next weekend? I've heard estimates in the 30s, seems high but not I guess considering their reputation its not that high. I'm just glad to have some meetings lined up, hopefully some funding will come of it

I believe he was calling you a bitch arse or, after translating from slang, a bitch ass. Really it was uncalled for considering the scenario.

Fun is fun. But you guys are derailing what's a productive thread for people applying to medical physics.

I agree with your first sentiment, specifically that fun most certainly is fun. I would even argue that, by definition, fun is fun. As to your second statement, I don't agree that my fun is derailing this thread, nor do I accept your tacit premise that a thread on medical physics should not be derailed.Kites wrote:Fun is fun. I realize this, as it's been said before. Yet I'm still confused about the underlying reasons for remaining anonymous. I realize there may be some cases where being anonymous is important, but in general why is everyone so afraid about revealing information? Moreover, I have a dissenting opinion as far as the medical physics community is concerned. I tell people it doesn't involve physics research in any way that would be recognized by a physicist as "physics research" and that's apparently offensive to a lot of medical physicists who want to maintain the status quo of medical physics as a subfield of physics when in fact it is something entirely different. It's not bad that it's different. I just think people need to be honest about how different it really is and a lot of people don't agree with that.

Re: 2011 Medical Physics Programs
Twistor, I understand your reasons for anonymity fully, but how about the other people who are posting on this thread? I realize there are some people who are a little off the wall online, more so than they are in real life. However, most of the people posting here don't fit into that category, yet they still engage in remaining completely anonymous. I find that perplexing. I realize it's everyone's own choice to stay anonymous, but there has to be an underlying reason in doing so.twistor wrote:For me it's a matter of being able to speak freely.
