Mathematica is Horrible

Post by YodaT » Thu Dec 16, 2010 6:34 am

Has anybody tried doing computationally heavy modeling on the student version of Mathematica? Well, it sucks. I can't edit a code or change any properties of a called function to meet my needs. Also, I heard the student version was built to be less computationally effective... can anybody verify this?

Have you tried approaching your department to get regular mathematica? I did and it wasn't a problem, of course that might just be my school but it's worth a try.

From what I hear the "pro" version is just as computationally effective as the "student" version. It might have to do with something about Mathematica using physical memory... dependent upon your OS I guess? Regardless, a professor is gonna let me use his computer a few days over break (they use it for LIGO stuff). Hopefully this works out.

I too have heard that the Pro is as computationally effective as the Student version, but I've always used pro so I can't speak from experience. However, while it is good that your prof is allowing you to use his computer (pretty cool prof if you ask me, some are not so easy going about stuff like that.) I would approach your math department, as they usually are in charge of the program itself. I'm willing to bet that they will either give you permanent access to a lab or if you're lucky like me they'll put the program on your personal computer and give you access to their server. Trust me, it's at least worth looking into. If the department admins don't know how to help you, just approach the prof in charge of the math labs, that way you’ll have access beyond this break.

I'm pretty sure suggesting pirated software through torrents isn't allowed on the forum, even if you use a silly, reverse-psychology approach.

Just the way I wouldn't suggest looking into http://gen.lib.rus.ec/search?req=Mathem ... etype=orig for free e-copies of Mathematica material.

Why wouldn't suggesting piracy be allowed?

The suggestion that one do it and the act of doing are two separate things.

It's pretty standard rules for most forums I've ever been in.

Here are some examples

http://forums.omnigroup.com/showthread.php?t=16307
"No illegal content. Beyond the obvious, this includes talking about pirating software or breaking other companies' NDAs."

http://www.djforums.com/forums/faq.php? ... q_djfrules_
"#7 - Piracy is not tolerated at djforums. Posts requesting pirated music/software or linking to illegal downloads will be removed and any users participating in the discussion risk being banned. This also includes some links to blogs."

http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php?page=policy
"Adult Content, Violence, Illegal Activity: Messages containing violent, sexually oriented, or illegal content or links to sites with this content will either be deleted or saved in the Jail as evidence. Messages with links to or suggesting illegal activity will also be deleted. Posting or linking to any of these could result in a ban."

http://guides.macrumors.com/Help:Forum_Rules
"Warez/Serials/Keys. Do not post software serial numbers or keys or refer people to specific websites, software, or techniques whose purpose is to break or bypass software licensing methods, distribute cracks, or obtain or use commercial software or media in violation of its license and/or for copyright violation. Do not ask for or give such help."

I know right! Who wants a unix based operating system with an attractive and intuitive interface?

Oh that's right, physicists do!

And in an attempt to add more fuel to this potential fire

Emacs > vi

Actually Emacs >> vi. The difference in magnitude is close to the difference between the size of the universe and the fuzzy string things that string theorists are predicting.

Nothing beats an text editor in which you can play Tetris and Dunnet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunnet_%28game%29), or chat with an awesome build-in psychologist, or do the butterfly thing:

Emacs is a nice OS. Unfortunately, it sucks as a text editor.

vi sucks too. That's why vim exists.

vi and vim is like a long stick cut off from a tree. When you only want to do something simple with it, like scare away a fox, then there is no point in getting a sophisticated tool for the job. Emacs is a sophisticated tool for sophisticated coding and vi/vim is for cave dwellers.

I totally agree that Tetris and text adventures are essential features in sophisticated coding tool.

Not essential but its nice to know emacs will do whatever I ask it to do, including emulate vi with more extensibility that vi has itself (viper mode!).

I lmfao. So, these witty comic strips are what occupy 10% of physics fellows' time.

You need to know advanced engineering mathematics & probability theory to be able to understand all this.
