I am currently studying classical mechanics (Marion and Thornton) to prepare. Is this overkill? Should I be studying an entry level book like Serway that covers most basic physics? Is there any benefit from studying upper level undergrad material? I am just concerned about the Physics GRE, for now.

I think Marion and Thornton is good to practice with. It is a bit on the overkill side of things but still quite good. Besides you probably have all kinds of worked homework problems from that book which you are familiar with. However, I would make sure you have a good handle on the easier stuff in your lower division texts before spending too much time with upper division books.
