Berkeley application complete?
Berkeley application complete?
Hi,
did anybody receive the email from Berkeley saying that the application is complete?
They said they would start sending those emails on Jan 11th, so it should be about
time.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
Not yet. The last e-mail I received was from the graduate admission staff with the subject 'Your online application to UC Berkeley' after I submitted my application. Did you receive any other e-mail saying that they will send us confirmation by January 11?
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Seconded. I also got the email confirming that I had submitted the online application, but have not gotten any sort of confirmation that the other materials have been received.
I have actually only gotten a couple of these emails, and that was at the end of last week, so hopefully more will come this week.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
@mike164: I also received the email with subject
'Your online application to UC Berkeley'. Later
during the holidays I wrote to the department, and
got an automated response saying 'we will
start notifying whether applications are complete
or not on Jan 11'.
I think we shouldn't be worried, anyway if you receive that
email please let us know.

Did anyone get the 'application complete' email from Berkeley this week?
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Still nothing from Berkeley after another week. Did anybody hear from them?

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I applied to the astro program, but I haven't heard anything yet either. I wouldn't worry too much about it anyway. Most schools will contact you if there are pieces of your application missing. I don't think any of my other schools confirmed that my application was complete except for the ones that had online status websites (like ASU). I would consider no news as good news.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Yes I agree, in general if you do not hear from a school you should be fine.
Still, Berkeley Physics explicitly states that they will notify when the application
is complete, so we should expect a confirmation email from them sooner or later.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I just got an email saying my app is complete:
"Your application is complete and you are being considered for
admission to the Ph.D. program in physics at the University of
California at Berkeley."

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I think they sent out a bunch of "you're app is complete" emails today. I got one, a friend of mine did too.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
I did not get one. I am hoping I am not alone - anyone else?
I'm assuming I will probably just get it tomorrow, but this whole waiting thing is just terrible. It's hard not to worry about any little thing...

No response yet here either. Wonder if there's any correlation to submission date? (Submitted Dec. 1st)

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I haven't heard anything yet either, but maybe they're still grouping stuff together and sending out emails as each one gets completed.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Submitted November 28. Just received an email from UCB that my application is complete.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
just received an email. i had submitted around december 15.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Received mine today too.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Has anyone still not received a confirmation? I'm still waiting for mine and contemplating whether I should call them.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
I haven't received the confirmation yet. I submitted in early December. At this point I am
getting a little worried about it. Are there any others in the same boat?

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I am in the same boat - submitted early december and still haven't heard anything. Maybe they are going alphabetically or something? I dunno... but I am just hoping I get confirmation soon.
Also, I am pretty worried that some of my mail is getting filtered out as junk, has anyone had any problems with this?

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I haven't received my confirmation email yet. I wouldn't sweat it though. I went to Berkeley and organizationally, things are always delayed. If you're truly worried that your application isn't complete, then I'd email them. But if you just want communication from them, I'd say don't worry about it. They're probably too busy sorting things out. And most likely going in alphabetical order.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Finally got the confirmation email.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
hurrah ..Aaah that says some thing about the number of applicants to Berkeley this time
Re: Berkeley application complete?
Anyone else still not heard that their Berkeley application is complete?
It seems like a lot of emails were sent out last week and if everyone else has heard, I figure I should probably give them a call and see what is up...

Re: Berkeley application complete?
My family name starts with S and I received the confirmation
last Friday. This may be useful if the 'alphabetical order hypothesis'
is correct.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
My last name starts with and "L" and I have not heard back yet.
I am guessing that it is either random or more complicated than just alphabetically - maybe it is being done alphabetically within specialty/research interests?
Otherwise, maybe I was just overlooked or there is some problem...

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I haven't heard either, although I applied to the astro department. People have already started receiving acceptances from astro too.
I still wouldn't worry about it; it might be that they have a huge stack that they threw everything into randomly when they came in, and as they sort materials and files get completed they send a notification. If you're really concerned, I would suggest sending them an email yourself or calling.

Hmm, it's not submission date or alphabetical....

Re: Berkeley application complete?
Anyone else hear back this week?... I think I'm starting to see the writing on the wall for myself and the other sub-800-ers.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
I still have not heard anything. I sent an email yesterday asking if this was an indication that something was wrong (since on one of the webpages I saw, it said that they were planning to get information about the completeness of their application out to everyone by Jan 31...), but I have not heard anything yet. I will post when I get a response
Maybe they are sorting by PGRE score (I think they get all the scores on a disc and have to move them to applications), but even if they were, I highly doubt we would be discounted by having a score less than 800, just means we have to wait a little longer to hear back...

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I got mine on 2/1 and I'm def not in the 900s.. I think it may be in reverse chronological order by submission? I submitted mine hours before the deadline.. lolMacCutcheon60 wrote:Hmm, it's not submission date or alphabetical....

We played this game my year too :p I think it's random.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I'd be willing to accept randomness if one person scoring under an 800 had heard back yet...
I don't mean to imply that those of us in this range are hopeless, but I do think there's a good chance that the first large batch of acceptances will roll out before we hear anything back.

LMFAO ^^ Brilliant... they clearly look at one application per day on average, starting with the higher GRE scores and work their way downward. Oh wait the 950 was admitted before the 980... oh so close.
I think it's a weighted average of all the factors mentioned...
aC*(bE-B)+(cA/D)^dF
Capital letters are as follows:
A) Number corresponding to last name initial (1-26)
B) Day of the year of submission date (1-365)
C) PGRE score
D) QGRE score
E) Length of personal statement (in characters).
F) Radial distance from Berkeley to applicant's undergrad school in light microseconds.
lower case a,b,c and d are constants to be determined experimentally
Let's all sit around and try to fit the data to the notifications so far so we can determine the numerical constants. And then everyone will know their fate.

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I know someone with sub-800 that heard (by email?) that "she is in the final round of the admissions process". Before anyone freaks out/jumps to conclusions, we both attended Berkeley and I don't know her source as they are completely over-protective with the committee members here.
If you want a slightly educated opinion--randomness.

Haha, we've been studying physics for the past four years. What else would you expect?quizivex wrote: Let's all sit around and try to fit the data to the notifications so far so we can determine the numerical constants.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
not to completely change topics, but are berkeley physics grad students generally very happy?
i've heard conflicting things about this.. just trying to pass the time waiting for UCB to send out its decisions

Re: Berkeley application complete?
I was there during visiting weekend in 2008 and the graduate students there seemed quite happy.

I have a close friend in the grad program at Berkeley and she loves it. All the worse that I rejected
Re: Berkeley application complete?
I'm very happy and I can't imagine a place I'd rather live.
Re: Berkeley application complete?
I am thankful to say that I was accepted into Berkeley physics yesterday.. and you're right, San Francisco is arguably one of the best cities in the country-- can't wait for the open house
