MIT vs. Columbia

Post by bronco199 » Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:14 pm

Any thoughts? Specifically for experiment? (condensed matter, biophysics...)
Anyone visited both have any ideas?

MIT seems like the big famous, but very unfriendly department, while Columbia is the smaller, less famous, but nicer place.

decision, decision...

offhand I'd choose MIT... dream school. If you are not too bad, PhD from MIT has obvious advantage

What??!?! Whatever makes you think that Columbia is less famous?! You should chose on the basis of factors that would matter, such as research match!

Columbia is less famous. A PhD in physics from MIT carries certain connotations that a PhD from Columbia does not. I doubt that this is what the parent was concerned about, but still...
