Waiting List

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Waiting List

Post by naseermk » Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:21 pm

I'll start off with a request.

Anyone who has received an offer from Stony Brook and has decided on going to another school pls decline.

Is this thread really necessary?

This is the email I received:
"I decided to put you on "hold", which means that if positions are available after April 15, you might be offered admission."

It might make a difference??

Well the idea of "decline offers you don't want" has been spread pretty thick on this forum already.

@rohit and twimc: Yes, UMass is really the only school I believe I still have a chance at. So, while I believe rohit will be accepted first to UMass in HEP over me and my record please if you know you prefer another school to UMass please decline.

thank you

@rohit: Ya, I got a letter about the same time as you, and that's about all I know. :) Maybe they are just playing with us and there really are no places left. In any event I hope we get into somewhere. best

I think there won't be another wave of offers even after Apr 15. Admission committees are so experienced in the number of people who may accept offers after many years. but one or two offer in schools with entering class of 20 would be probable.

Carnegie, Brown, Penn State. Damn 3 waitlists.

This means at least 2 rejections, if not 3. :?

are you sure you have not received rejection email from Penn State? they rejected many people this week and they have already said there is no wait list. if not, you would have high chance for this school.

Actually it was only after I saw so many rejections on this website that I decided to mail them. So yeah I am on waitlist.

I just want to add that at this point you really should be declining by email, not post. Last year when I was going through all this stuff I declined an offer by post in early April and got an email at about 6pm on April 15 asking me if I had made a decision. They said that they had a student or two on the waitlist who were waiting to see if some spots opened up at the 11th hour. I imagine that I made life a lot more stressful than it needed to be for that student, and I felt kinda lousy about it afterwards.

UMass (astro)
UMD (astro)
Columbia (astro)
Johns Hopkins (physics- astro program)

I emailed all these guys plus one other school which promptly told me I was rejected there, so I'm thinking I'm on the waitlist if I haven't heard yet?

Does anyone know roughly what the percentage acceptance rate is of applications on waiting lists?

I think the fluctuation is big, depending specific schools you applied for.

I contacted osu as my status is "evaluation" since february! The response was :
"We still do not know whether or not the department is full for the autumn
2009 enrollment. We know that it is getting close to the middle of April,
but April 15 is the deadline for offer acceptances to be turned in. We will
know for sure by that date, but if you have received offers from other
universities, you may want to consider them. "
Should I ask about my position in the waiting list?

Declined Brown... I wonder if that actually makes a difference for you.

oh well, I guess it can't hurt...

anyone feel like declining UChicago and/or Columbia astro?

//fbb

edit: I guess I should ask anyone who has accepted elsewhere to withdraw from the waitlists too. I'm paranoid that even if an offer is eventually made, maybe it would be too late due to the department having to phone everyone on the waitlist in order on the day. I assume it is all pretty hectic on the 15th, but does anyone know how it works?

/Thanks. I'm not sure if it helps. They say I should wait until 15th. BTW thanks for your kind reaction.
