University of British Columbia

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Has anyone heard anything from British Columbia?

I heard that the committee has already released the admissions for MSc, however I still have not heard anything about PhD admissions.

I would love to know if anyone has heard anything. I applied for the Msc in the astronomy dept, not sure if astronomy and physics are seperate departments but I haven't heard a peep and I really hope to cause they one of my top choices.

No responds and I am still waiting too.

According to thegradcafe.com, there was someone accepted on 11 Mar 2008 last year.

So, we still have hope.

Yes, they have replied. I received an acceptance on 2/6 by email and they have sent me an official letter by email and by post. I applied to the school in CME. Best of luck to you who are waiting.

Did you apply for MSc or PhD?

I applied to the MSc en route to the PhD. I don't recall there being an option to apply directly to the PhD, but I might be mistaken. I remember my choices being a terminal MSc or an MSc en route.

I'm pretty sure that UBC (as with most Canadian universities) requires an MSc for admission into their PhD program.

I dont remember being asked if it was terminal Msc or en route to Phd one, I hope they don't think it is the terminal one. Does anyone know if astro is considered separate form physics there?

http://www.physics.ubc.ca/graduate/admission.php

The minimum requirement for admission to the Ph.D. program is an M.Sc. or M.A.Sc. in physics, astronomy or mathematics "with an average grade of at least 80%. In exceptional cases, students with a B.Sc. or B.A.Sc. may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program. Students in our M.Sc. or M.A.Sc. program may transfer to the Ph.D. program after one year if their academic performance is sufficiently strong and their research supervisor approves"
