Stony Brook Application Status

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Stony Brook Application Status

Post by PhysicsPdx » Tue Feb 10, 2009 12:58 pm

When I checked the status of my application through the Stony Brook Physics homepage, it came up as:

Status of application for PIN number *********, as of 2/7/2009 13:03.

Your file has been reviewed. You will receive a notification about the decision in a few days.

Although a decision has been made, we need time to make a final check on the documents received with the application. Also, sending a notification to you directly (instead of posting the result here) protects your privacy. Please be patient.

Has anyone else received this message? Is this what it always says once they review your application? Does it seem like they would take the time to review the documents if I was rejected, or is that an automatic message?

What does it mean!?!??!

Thanks Helio,

I found the other posts on this topic, it looks like it is a generic message. Let's hope it is the generic message they send to people they are going to accept!

My status is still
Status of application for PIN number *********, as of 2/7/2009 13:03.
Your file is complete and it is under review by the Admissions Committee.
Could it be that the internationals will be reviewed and notified later. Or at least that is what I am hoping for...

@sidharthsp

I am domestic and my status is the same as yours. Honestly, I don't think one should read too much into these. Why would you tell someone the decision is ready, but you are not gonna give it to them yet. I remember someone got that quite sometime ago. Its downright cruel. What do they do? Run an FBI check on you?!

I got the "We've made a decision" message 6 days ago, and no snail mail or e-mail from them yet. It's pretty much killing me.

I thought internationals are evaluated later, which is a fairly common trend. But since you too are facing it, that should not be the case. As u said it is better not to read too much into these.

Stony brooks is my reach school, and it would be great to get a good news :) .

Tell me about it. I've been rabidly checking my email and I almost took the handle off of my mailbox when I got home today. Cruelty, that's what it is... Just let me know!

I really hope I got in there. I mean, I did an REU there last summer and liked the place. Probably my first or second choice. And although I didn't really get much very good work done (I was completely uninterested in my assigned project), I think I stood out as an all-around knowledgeable student with a good desire to learn. At least, more so than some of the other people in my program...oh god...(They might read this...whatever).

Haha, "bumping a thread" just means making a post so that it's on the top of the list again. When I saw that this thread was on top (that is, someone recently posted in it), I thought that maybe Stony Brook was sending out results and I got anxious. I don't really hate you, hah.

I thought I had broken some forum rule I didn't know about.

Tell me about anxious, this waiting is beginning to do harm to my sleep. I had a dream last night that was a combination of Crysis and graduate admissions/rejections. It was strange, and more than a little disturbing.

Oh, Stony Brook... Do I have bad breath? I even shaved today so I would look pretty for any email I might receive. Blar.

I had called them up. My status is also "complete and under review".

Apparently they haven't sent my application to the admissions committee yet.

So more delay :?

Oh wow. What the hell are they waiting for? I mean, I can understand all the programs that had free applications getting tons of applicants, but honestly how many do you think Stony Brook actually got? And their department is pretty big...

gradschoolshopper.com says they had 305 applicants for 29 places last time. If numbers are similar this time around then it really is not too much. Delay in my case seems to be due to me being an international applicant. Even other places like Florida and Purdue haven't started yet for internationals.

There is an option to apply for free to Stony Brook, but it is followed by a line that says that candidates seem more serious if they pay a fee, or something like that. What I wrote was more of a contrast.

That sounds like asking for a bribe.
