Different question on Astrophysics

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

That question totally depends on the region and who you work for. Giving a ballpark figure really wouldn't be fair.

starting salary

I think the starting salary isn't the issue in today's climate.
It's be glad you even get in somewhere. And then from there
you have to bring in grant money. But, I've heard of a couple
of starter salaries (one in NY and the other in GA) and they
were both about $63,000 for a starter professor. One of them
had to get grant money within 2 years or they would be booted
which is a shorter time frame than the tenure decision of 5-7 years.
Plus as a university starting professor you have to get the
right students to start off with or if a student leaves or isn't so
good, that could sink you.
