horrible AWA score...

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

I can't imagine that writing a well-structured, well-thought out, complete essay in a ridiculously short time interval is an importamt skill for graduate study in physics. If I were on an admissions committee I would definitely give the analytic writing score the least weight of any gre score. I don't know what the standard practice is, though.

I really don't think that the writing section is very heavily weighted. I wouldn't worry. You can always study a little bit and take the test again, if you feel like you need to.

I don't think you'll have to worry. I have similar scores (800 math, 640 verbal, 3.5 writing) with an 810 physics GRE, I've already gotten into Wisconsin-Madison.

Ohh...yeah...I just had fun with mine. On that one section where you get to choose, one of my choices was about shifting education to focusing more on emotional development and I just started ranting.

I scored 790, 320 and 3 on GRE test and 800 on PGRE test. But I 've been accepted from UW-Madison. So, I think you don't have to worry about it.

More like I just said some crap about coming from a liberal arts college and being a TA and seeing students who know the rigorous mathematical procedure for solving cut-and-dry problems, but no idea how to apply that knowledge to things that matter (like original research).

You probably shouldn't worry too much about it. I don't really see how the essay section can really be all that effective, and there is anecdotal evidence that it is a sham anyway, just in case you were curious:

that was really shocking.. thanks a lot for sharing.. i feel a lot better..

actually i was more tensed when some of my friends told me that AWA score was a judging factor for getting TA.. is that true? i highly doubt it now though after seeing so many things against it.

I would think that most people on an admissions committee would be able to figure out if you have any communication skills by reading your statement of purpose. Besides, you already did well on the verbal section of the GRE and I am sure that counts more than the timed writing section.
