What is the first thing you will do when you're accepted?

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

I don't plan on downing the whole bottle, mind you. I have my own work to do here, as well.

But I might just take the night off when the news comes.

My victory liquor:

Image

I actually bought it Friday morning, roughly two hours before I got my acceptance from Wisconsin, and had to restrain from opening it all day. Fortunately an alcoholic grad student was around when I found out and he let me do a celebratory shot of the Grey Goose he (evidently) keeps on hand for such occasions -- then I got to teach a gen phys homework clinic!

Interestingly enough, the Doublewood was supposed to be the victory liquor, with the Jim Beam to hold me over until then, but while the scotch was very tasty, I discovered a heretofore unrealized affinity for rye whiskey over the course of about six drinks last night...

Oh, it can be incredibly good.

Actually when I went to the liquor store yesterday I saw they had some Johnnie Walker Blue Label, which would be perfect for celebrating something like this...

...but I didn't have $240 for a bottle of alcohol. So I just bought a couple of bottles of Crown Royal (saving one as pictured) and some of the other stuff for Manhattans.

Never actually tried any Canadian whiskey either, but it's on the list. To this point it's just been scotch, Irish, and bourbon for me...

Um, I know there's no possible justification for this :(

but...

I'd just come in from cross country skiing on campus and cold and hunger soon eclipsed the heart-warming news. I microwaved some soup in a mug, ate half, and phoned my mother.

Er, anyway, I'm glad that you have a more appropriate beverage on hand and am sure you'll soon have occasion to use it. :)

I got back to work in the lab :/. Later, though, there was some alcohol involved.

I got the Wisconsin acceptance email at 3:30. At 4, I was already at one of the bars downtown for a happy hour... I think I spent like $80+ on buying drinks for my friends last night...

Haha, this is the third straight year a drinking thread emerged:

As for the progresso soups, I like those instant ones you can throw in the microwave. But they piss me off like crazy... they're filled to the very top and the lid shoots soup everywhere no matter how careful you are trying to peel it off.

The whiskey drinkers are beating the heck out of the last couple year's threads, and of course I love me a good beer too. But it looks like we need some girly drink representatives to balance things out...

That is The Balvenie Doublewood, my favorite scotch whiskey! Six years in a traditional oak cask, six years in a sherry oak cask... 12 years of pure loveliness!

For sure, that is the bottle I will dip into when the first acceptance (with funding) comes in.

Ahhhhhhhh....

I'm pretty happy that it seems, for the most part, that prospective physics grad students at least have decent tastes in alcohol, or so it seems. I would have bought something better if I could've afforded it.

I'll go climb a mountain, most likely Mt Baldy- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mt._San_Antonio , and drink a bottle of red wine although it might instead be whisky, at the top.

I do not understand how a human being could judge who will go to heaven/hell. Such an attitude is the reason why many people are turning away from faith.

Well i think we should move this discussion to the lounge at some point. It is the problem with religion to some extend... we are better than you and all that. If some people would be less ignorant about certain things (Abraham being the father or Islam, Christianity and Judaism, or sodomy being a sin [my personal favorite], etc.) the world would be a happier place. I have my interpretation of things and people won't accept that and tell me i am damned... what a cozy feeling.

A nice little anecdote to round this off. I was on the phone with a Sikh friend of mine and he was approach Campus Crusade for Christ (the name itself just spews ignorance), while talking on the phone. The only way he could get the guy off his back was to say "damnation is mine" after this guy told him that he will go to hell if he does not convert to christianity.
