TA Orientation

  • As many already know, studying for the physics GRE and getting accepted into a graduate program is not the final hurdle in your physics career.
  • There are many issues current physics graduate students face such as studying for their qualifier, deciding upon a field of research, choosing an advisor, being an effective teaching assistant, trying to have a social life, navigating department politics, dealing with stress, utilizing financial aid, etc.

TA Orientation

Post by tau1777 » Sun Jan 25, 2009 4:27 am

hi,so i'm pretty sure i've been accepted into this school, and also sure that I will have to TA to make tuition. the problem is that their TA orientation thing is before the 1st two weeks of classes or in other words the last two weeks of August, and I'm supposed to be out of the country for the whole month of august.

so my questions are: do most schools do their TA orientations around this time? and is there any way I can get around doing it? or maybe re-schedule somehow? any and all inputs will be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Well, TA orientation is usually the week plus before classes start (doesn't make sense to do it after the start of classes), and most schools start at around the end of August or the beginning of September, so yes. Most schools have TA orientation around this time. Some are certainly later (many schools on a quarter system don't start until well in to September). However, you don't really want to choose a school based on it's schedule for a conflict that will only happen once. You should contact them and see if you can do it later. I haven't heard of it being done, but I wasn't looking for examples of it either.
