check application material to MIT

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

check application material to MIT

Post by rockwhj » Mon Jan 12, 2009 6:01 pm

anyone has idea how to check whether they've received my material (transcripts, etc)? It says no additional email or telephone inquiries will be answered, an email will be sent once they receive complete application, but how do i know whether anything is missing during mail? thanks

They'll contact you if anything's missing. Over the winter break, I got an e-mail about a missing recommendation and a few days after that one was submitted, I got a second e-mail confirming the application is complete.

You should be able to go into their application system to check your status (same link as the application.) It won't show your transcripts, but it'll show your application and recommendations. If you're really concerned, you could try calling/e-mailing them. The first e-mail I received said to contact them if I have not received a follow-up message by 18th and I think that my application is complete.

I got the email from Monica Wolf, a secretary at MIT on January 6.

Same here - I haven't heard from them at all. I hope that's due to the fact that they receive ~700 applications so they still haven't processed all of them; especially if they sort them alphabetically, considering my last name starts with Z.

I got an email from Crystal Young on Jan 12 saying my application was complete. It's interesting that WakkaDojo was contacted by a different person. Perhaps they divide the applications up into stacks and assign a different person to check them for completeness. But, honestly, who knows!

It's even funnier in my case, I got two emails. The first from Crystal Young on Dec 22 and the second from Monica Wolf on Jan 7. It only occurs to me that this could be somehow related to the supposed split of the applications into groups sorted by research interest. I'm applying to HEP, does this make sense to you?

Maybe you're going to get reviewed TWICE (and have twice the shot at acceptance)! Gotta watch out if they accept you twice, however...

Wow! I didn't think about that. So now I will be happy if they reject me only once, because that would mean that I was accepted once also! Am I wrong?... end of paranoic thought
Seriously, in my case there was a professor inside which make sure that all my materials were safe (he kinda admitted that some applications can disappear or not be read properly). Probably I received an early message because of him and then I received the general one.

I got a mail on Jan 19, 2011 stating that my GRE Scores were not received/ matched.
We had to use 3514 inst code and 0808 dept code, right? Could someone with a complete application please ascertain this? Thanks if you may.

Edit - So it says on https://www.applyweb.com/apply/mitg/physinst.html, at least.

^^Yep that is the ETS code that I used. You might want to call ETS again, they make errors in sending out scores from time to time.

I received an email on 21 Dec from Crystal Young that my application is complete.

This forum is turning into thegradcafe, lol.

And on this subject, has anyone heard from Stanford, Berkeley or Boulder about the completeness of their applications?

Also applying to Stanford here. I've heard nothing from them...

Has anyone heard from Princeton or Columbia about complete applications or missing materials?

I did get an email from Harvard saying my app is complete. I never got an official word from Princeton, but their website allows you to check the status of the materials, and since everything of theirs is papaerless, the only thing you have to check is that the GRE scores are in.

Excuse my ignorance, but where do you see whether the GRE scores have been received in the Princeton application? I can only see the date in which I took the tests (in the "Test Scores" section, not in the "Received" section), does that mean that they have been received?

Yeah that would be it. When my scores weren't matched, the fields were all blank. The dates appeared after I was sure that ETS had sent the scores, and that other schools have received them as well.

And I called Stanford and Berkeley today. Stanford says they will inform us if any materials are missing. The admin assistant at Berkeley told me that they have not even started the applications review process yet (!!) as classes are starting, but they will let us know if our applications are complete as soon as they can.

I actually emailed them (they have a rather pathological email system). They confirmed that all my materials are in and that my app is under review.

UCSB sent me an email to the effect that they are starting reviews and that if my application wasn't complete I should complete it. (So I wasted time verifying that my application was, in fact, complete.)

Has anyone here who applied to MIT not yet received a confirmation that his/her application is complete? Judging from posts from last year and this year it seems I should have received a similar confirmation email by now (heck, they even seem to send out offers in the beginning of February) .... except I haven't. I'm so paranoid that my application got lost somewhere in the mysterious interweb, or my transcript lost somewhere in the post office, or something!

And to add to the aggravation, MIT states explicitly in their FAQ that they will not answer inquires about application completeness, nor can I find a suitable person to contact on their website. Arrrrrgh!

I applied to MIT earth & planetary science. I too haven't received any email about my application being complete or incomplete. I had sent an email requesting TOEFL waiver and received a reply granting me the same. No other communication.

i got an email from a Prof. whom I had contacted about my application asking for my phone number and the time zone i am in. Does it mean an interview or just some verification stuff ? Do prof.'s explicitly mention "interview" in their emails ?

Has anyone heard from Columbia University (Physics) that his/her application is complete?

Have you guys checked your status online under downloadable forms? May I please ask if yours show recommendations, test scores, transcript, CV, Statement of Purpose, etc... received or blank?

Thank you.

Shown as received - I checked maybe a week or 2 weeks ago.

For me, on that form all my stuff shows as "received" and for the status field near the top it says "complete enough for review."

I've not heard anything from them directly since an automatic confirmation email upon submitting the application.

My GRE scores and transcript are shown as received, but everything else is still blank for me.
