great job guys!

@sidharthsp, Congratulations! With a score like that I think you won't have any problems because of the 20 pt decrease on the General GRE.

@tmc, holy ***! with a score like that added to your publications, you've got an amazing application!

Thanks man; I'm still very nervous though. It seems no matter what I do or put on my application, there are 15 people on this forum who do more (like get 990 on this thing)

Application time is nerve-racking

The large majority of us are planning on staying in academia (i.e., getting thrown around from post-doc to post-doc till we retire)

@tmc, no problem. I know what you mean about being nervous, I'm pretty happy with my application but then I look at everybody else's and I get scared. I've heard that publications go a really long way though so as long as you don't say "*** you!" in your SOP, I think you'll probably get in everywhere!

@kammyuce, like tmc said, most of us are planning on academia. Academia or a job at a national or private lab are really the only options if you want to stay in physics that I know of. However, I've heard of people in physics going into engineering and lots of other things; most people consider physics to be very difficult and I know of consulting firms who LOOK for physics Ph.D.s to hire, due to their perceived intelligence and problem solving skills, even though their work will have nothing to do with physics. So yes, you can get a job with a physics degree, but if you don't plan on doing physics after you graduate, I can't see a particularly good reason to get a degree in it.

Hey guys

I did the Nov 8 PGRE in Ireland and I'm wondering if the scores are available worldwide or just in the U.S so far? Where are the rest of you posting from?

910 here, which is less than the 930 on the October one. At least, it shows that my October score was not a fluke, so I am happy.
Congratulations to all the people with good scores.

Hi!

Every time I call, it says they have no record when I use the confirmation #, and that my scores aren't ready when i use my SS#.

Reading the thread from when the last batch of scores were available, I get the impression that the ONLY way calling actually works is with your registration #.

They kept my ticket at the testing location (for some weird reason).... is there any way of finding out my registration number, short of waiting until the customer service opens on monday morning?

Hahaha I've been fine waiting but today, knowing that its available, i'm like tearing my hair out and I can't get anything else done until I either get my score, or I know I have to wait.

Mine is 850 81%
I expected a 900+, though my major is EE.

Which tier of university do I have a great chance to get in?

Same... =/ I'm hoping that since my grades, general GRE scores, research experiences, recommendations, and (based on my professors opinions, my statement of purpose/goals,) are all strong, they'll overlook a very poor PGRE.

I'm emailing some professors now for advice. I feel like this needs to be addressed in my statement of purpose, but I don't want it to sound like I'm blaming something/someone for my poor performance. I'm glad I have been holding out on submitting my actual applications until I got my score, so now I can say that I know my score's bad, so I can try to justify it in some way.

If you can't find a good justification, then don't justify it.

-They know that the PGRE isn't a great measure of an applicant
-If you say something like you got stressed out, didn't prepare right, whatever, it looks even worse on you
-Many excuses will look like whining

Instead of excusing your bad PGRE score, it would probably be wiser to spend your SOP saying how great you are, how great your GPA and research experience are, etc. You're trying to sell yourself, so don't try to excuse a minor flaw; instead, convince them that the rest of the package is so great that the PGRE score is meaningless in comparison.

Well I know that, but I still want to address it at least. I feel like it might be worse to get a terrible PGRE score and completely ignore it.

my scores have not been released yet. The answering system says that they have my test on record but scores are not available yet, is it common for scores to come out at different times? Or do they all come out at the same time?

Yeah, that happens. Could be that only one of the versions is out, or their database hasn't finished updating all the scores or something.

Make sure to use your registration number, not SSN.

Oh, mine is bad. Significantly less than my practice exams, when I actually felt MORE confident about the real test. I'm still going to apply to the same schools, though. I'm not applying anywhere too high up, so I figure I should be ok, since everyone tells me the PGRE isn't the be all and end all.

It's killing me - I know now from all of you that the scores are out, but I am about to embark on finals week from hell... five nasty upper level finals in four days and finishing my applications that are due Dec. 15! I'm too scared to call and find out...if it's bad (it's definitely not going to be as good as your scores have been) it will psych me out too much and I'll do badly on finals... but dang it, the scores are out and I wanna know...

well atleast it's not a total disaster even though it's way lower than my practice score.
I just hope it's good enough for most of the programs i'm applying. :?

I got 940!

My GRE general scores were decent too. I got 740 + 800 in verbal and quant.

While I know that a good score doesn't help that much whereas a bad score surely hurts, I'm pretty satisfied! Congrats to everyone! Remember to celebrate!! I am soooo glad these silly tests are over.

i guess its a stupid question but i dont wanna use a credit card to get my scores since i wont be applying this year (coz i know my results will be terrible). So i guess i'll have to wait for them to mail it right? or am i wrong abt the credit card requirement?

Wait, what?

You get your scores in the mail no matter what.

no no, i think i din explain it properly. i know they mail it anyway, but I thought like one can see the toefl scores on their profile page with ETS, that it would be similar for PGRE scores. I don wanna waste 20$ or whatever the amount on getting the scores by phone and at the same time I cannot wait to know my scores

Mmm you cannot have everything. The only way to know the scores before getting the mail is to call ETS. If you cannot wait a couple of weeks to get the mail, call them and pay the 12 USD. There is no way to see them with any internet account like TOEFL. Bye!

Never mind about applying to Harvard. I just called and got my score. It's BAD. Like, below 20%. I will apply to the other schools on my list, but short of a miracle it looks like I'm not going anywhere next year. :(
