research opportunities?

Post by anonymous188 » Fri Nov 10, 2006 11:22 pm

I go to a mostly liberal arts school whose sciences aren't as strong as the other departments. I keep on hearing that research is important for graduate school, but the amount I would get at my university is limited. Are there any external organizations that could potentially offer some sort of research opportunity? My interests lie mainly in nanotechnology. Many thanks for any responses.

Go to NSF.gov and search for REUs. Those are research hsummer programs at other schools.

Thanks for the reply. Have you or anyone else applied and been accepted into one of these programs? I would like to know how selective the programs are, and seeing as they offer a nice stipend to each student, it would seem as if it would be hard getting into one. So far I've listed 6 programs that offer research in my area of interest. Would this be enough?

I went to the University of Chicago as an REU student in 2004, and the acceptance rate was ~20% then. It should still be around the same. I would assume that other institutions of similar level have similar acceptance rates.

Well my school hosts REUs each summer. The acceptance rate for those that attend my school are ~30-35%. For those applying outside of my school, it's ~20%, which is pretty high compared to the others. Maybe because people don't like florida and the Gators
