GRE Nov exam

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

GRE Nov exam

Post by aditi405 » Mon Jul 28, 2008 8:04 am

Hi,
many people have been talking about taking the gre and pgre in nov for fall admissions but the deadline for sending applications is mid dec in harvard, mit, stanford etc. i checked the ets website and it's been mentioned there that results will be mailed around 19th december if one takes the nov exams. so is there any way to get the results sooner?

My understanding is that, in general, as long as the rest of your application is complete, they'll accept the scores a little late. Physics departments with early application deadlines are aware of this potential problem -- most people take the test in November and schools don't want to exclude most of their potential applicants... It's bad for business. For programs that don't answer the question explicitly in a FAQ, you can email them to find out.

Yup, they're very understanding with late score reports, afterall, they've been getting them late for eons... before this past year, the GRE subject tests were offered in November and December, so all the scores came "late." Also, it's clear from the profile thread that schools generally don't send acceptances until February, so they're certainly not reviewing applications, or at least making decisions until well after the app deadlines. Their reason for the early deadlines is probably to make sure that all the materials are received by the time they review the apps... so that all the irresponsible slacker profs get their late recs in, and the damn academic records offices finally mail in the transcripts after waiting 10 long days to punish you for not buying expedited service. Also, some schools close down for winter break, so they want to make the deadline before the break rather than wait until Jan 2nd...

thanx, i was really worried i wouldn't be able to apply this year. also, i have a doubt regarding funding. although college websites mention financial aid in the form of TA etc what will be the immediate expenses after reaching the university. for ex- do we have to pay for housing etc or books as soon as we get there? obviously even if they do give a stipend one won't get it as soon as one lands there.

Yes, you generally have to pay for pretty much everything on your own (housing, books, etc.) If you need some money as soon as you hit the ground, get in contact with the university's financial aid office -- they might be able to get you a small loan to get things started.
