The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Nine Epic Battles Will Take Place On April 15, 2008!
These will determine the future of physcisgre.com and the whole universe. Due to quantum effects, each user can only observe three of these fights to the death. Which ones will you choose to see? Vote for three!
For each battle, whichever of the combatting users posts first on THIS THREAD on APRIL 15, according to the post's date stamp, using Eastern Standard Time with DST enabled, will be designated the winner!
Each user who isn't involved in a fight may list his prediction of the winners of each fight on this thread. Whoever gets the most correct will win a prize.

Fight to the death!!!
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
I'm amazed how little attention is given to threads in the lounge. After 4 days this post only got 100 views. In the main forum, new posts always get over 100 views on their first day. Oh well, that's why I started it on the main forum... I knew it'd get banned to the lounge eventually but I was hoping at least the regulars would see it first. Too bad RG never noticed it, lol, he would've taken it to the next level...
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
I have to fight myself? How do I know if I won?
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
And who the *** is shateep430?
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
yes, exactly WTF is shateep430?
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
shateep430 is a future generation international student who will come the forum in year 2017 and ask us to give him a list of American schools that would accept him with a 740 GRE.
However, if someone really wants to see me lose the battle, they could just register the username shateep430 today, since it does not yet exist, and beat me to this thread on April 15.

Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Let me just note that you're not the only one with an imaginary opponent. I guess I'm fighting against all comers?
Also, since I know this is going to get ugly, what timezone are we fighting in? My vote is for Pacific time, since that's far easier for others to join in other than if it's Eastern time. Besides, all the grad schools I applied to are on PDT anyways.

zxcv,
Your opponent is not imaginary. His/her name is being censored out thanks to policies that you helped establish.

TO THE DEATH!!!!!!
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Pacific time would be unfair, since as midnight approaches on April 14, it will be 3am on the east coast and all the guys will be asleep at and not have a chance to defend themselves.zxcv wrote:since I know this is going to get ugly, what timezone are we fighting in? The fairest time zone is the one used by this website to date-stamp the posts!
LOL! Well, that means zxcv has to fight every user in the world who has an inappropriate username. He'll have to fight f###, s### and all the other 4-letter words.twistor wrote:zxcv,

It would just make my day, (and whole semester), if a shateep430 shows up today!!!
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Oops, I actually got the 3 hour time correction backwards. Yes, I agree, midnight Eastern Time is best. Especially considering that I'm actually in Pennsylvania. (There's no one timezone used to date posts since everyone can set than in their preferences.)
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Ok, I now officially declare that we are fighting in the Eastern Standard Time Zone with DST enabled. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
We should randomly choose a time zone. What is GMT+09? Whatever that is, let's go with that.
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Ok I just chose one randomly, GMT-04... oh wow that happens to be EST anyway. Kewl..twistor wrote:We should randomly choose a time zone. What is GMT+09? Whatever that is, let's go with that.
Ok here I will state my predictions for the battle winners...
1) garden vs. multigoal
Despite garden's recent appearances, I think multigoal is dying for the excuse to post his profile yet again. So he'll probably post it here on April 15 and defeat garden.
2) fermiboy vs. fermiguy
I'm unaware of the outcome of their preliminary joust at the teviatron... but I think fermiguy is psyched about the battle and will win.
3) physicsdude vs. fissicsd00d
physicsdude thinks he's too good for the forum. So I think he'll refuse to participate and be defeated.
4) quizivex vs. shateep430
I'd love to see someone create the username shateep430 and pull off the upset on April 15. But I'll probably end up prevailing.
5) twistor vs. twistor2
Since twistor2 is just a manifestation of twistor, either one could win. But because twistor likes to extend his lead in the race to 1000 posts, he will be the one to post here on April 15.
6) RG vs. 400nm
RG wins!!!! since 400nm is on spring break in cancun or something...
7) zxcv vs. ***
Is it possible to have a username with asterisks? I doubt it... so zxcv will win by default...
Maxwells_Demon vs. Maxwell200
Maxwells_Demon will win cuz he will frequent the forum more often, being a member of next year's class, whereas Maxwell200's plans are already set.
9) Grant vs. Imaginary_Friend
Imaginary_Friend was a temporary name created in 2004 to help get the first ever conversation going on physicsgre.com. It has since been decommissioned. So Grant shall win on April 15.

Ya, but what odds are they giving in Vegas?
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Tensions are building, the battle is approaching... 2 more days... will I win or will a shateep430 come out of the vacuum and defeat me...
will garden defend his greatness...
will fermiguy knock off his archrival...
will 400nm present herself again...

Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
The battle is looming. The weather forecast is stormy nationwide. Everybody, including 5000 users from around the world will be at the edge of their rolling computer chairs to watch the battle unfold on April 15...
All one has to do to win is be the first to post on this thread on April 15, Eastern time!!!
Good luck to everyone.
shateep430 is going down!!!!
I've seen users representing each of the 9 pairs of contestants present on the forum in the past week... this will be so exciting...

Well quiz, you win some, you lose some.
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Yeah, lol. I even checked a few times over the past few weeks to see if a shateep430 had been registered and it hadn't yet... never imagined he'd be born 12 minutes before the turning point in physicsgre.com history, when he wasn't expected to arrive to the forum until 2017!!
I have the worst luck... none of the other fighters have even had the pride to show up... except my opponent, lol...

Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
LOL. I wonder who the real power behind shateep430 is?
I guess I defeat ***? (Fortunately I don't think that name could be registered.)

Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
I tried to become shateep430 earlier today, but I had trouble creating the account. I was gonna talk a bunch of trash, then probably end up losing, so maybe it's good someone beat me to it.
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
LOL!!
Would the mastermind behind shateep like to identify himself??
I doubt he's actually Indian, or scored 740 on the GRE or plans to apply in fall 2017...
Yeah zxcv, you win, but it's nothing to be proud of... being the last man standing is easy when you're the only person in the fight.

Am I the only one a little disappointed at the lack of epicness (epicnosity? epictitude?) of these "battles"? At the very least, there should be some type of flame war.

Actually I am a real imaginary friend that has waited 4 years for an opportunity to interact with the real world again. Unfortunately, I will probably recess back into the mind of my host for another 4 years.Imaginary_Friend was a temporary name created in 2004 to help get the first ever conversation going on physicsgre.com. It has since been decommissioned. So Grant shall win on April 15.
It was great to have the opportunity defeat my host mind during this April 15th completion. All the best to you all in your graduate school studies.

Lets resolve this with a simple equation:
quizivex = shateep430
quizivex = shateep430

you need two equations to solve for two unknownsRG wrote:Lets resolve this with a simple equation:

Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
Congrats fermiguy, RG, Imaginary_Friend, zxcv and of course shateep430!
And no I'm not shateep... I hoped to see someone register and try to defeat me but I would not have done it myself... sadly now I have a restless desire to identify the real shateep...
I'm proud of myself for bringing back Imaginary_Friend, who the world has not seen for 4 years. It's fascinating to look back at the primordial threads. In the beginning, there was nothing. Grant used Imaginary_Friend to start the first "conversation" on the forum, which caught the attention of x-ray and others, starting a chain reaction of new users coming which lead to the forum being the remarkable resource it is today.
Appearances of Imaginary_Friend are even more rare than those of garden!!!!
Thanks zxcv for your dedication to good humor on physicsgre.com, you are now exonerated from the stigma of being the stimulus behind the censorship policies...
This battle symbolizes the verbal flame war some forum members have had with each other over the past few months. It gave the opportunity for the users to earn a concrete victory over a rival, since all the verbal wars on things such as the relevance of the GRE or the tolerability of state schools cannot be settled decisively... there's no right or wrong answer. April 15th officially marks the end of an era of our lives and the battle was scheduled accordingly. Thus it's certainly epic!!!!!dlenmn wrote:My god, quiz defeated himself!

I was actually going to guess zxcv earlier today, since shateep's "hint" implied the user must be dlenmn, fermiguy, doom, zxcv or RG... but doom claims he was unable to create the account, dlenmn suspected it was me which rules him out, RG hasn't been around too often lately, and fermiguy probably would have taken his victory earlier if he really was around at midnight yesterday, (as fermiboy is very active on the forum and might have stolen it)...zxcv wrote:Okay, I fess up: I'm shateep430.
I think this pretty much confirms it..., since this post came at the same minute as the previous one, and it's quite unlikely shateep, if he were someone else, would have noticed zxcv's post and replied to it so fast...shateep430 wrote:Not true!

I think I have discovered user vaibhavtewari as the original precursor of shateep430. One post, asking basically what the chances are of getting into a top 10 school.

Huh... I thought zxcv was one of the two primary advocates for the censorship, along with 400nm... Maybe he's bipolar or shateep and him switched bodies or the duo is posting contradictory stuff on here to have fun with us...zxcv wrote:For the record, I was never in favor of censorship, and never argued for it.
As for censorship, I found it remarkable that bad language on this forum is a rather recent thing... I've been on the forum for over a year and visited it (without posting) for about a year before that. Initially, I always liked the manners and politeness on the forum, and actually noticed there was no bad language in previous years... so when I joined the forum, I made sure not to use any vulgar language, not that it bothers me, but just to stick with tradition... However, bad words sortof filtered into our language this year and while they're not necessary I think it's just a natural component of the carefree, humorous personalities that have made the forum so active and fun this year!
And guess what, I can trace it back to one single post!!!!!! The greatest post of all time. GARDEN's December 4th post... Yeah, do a search and look at the dates... Of the 81 uses of the "F-word", garden was the first person to bring the word to the forum... well actually, there was ONE use before his, but it was back in 2006 when students were talking about getting drunk... But after garden's seminal post, so many people were analyzing and imitating it that the F-word started to get used regularly, and so did other similar words, and our language deteriorated into that of an inner city high school cafeteria... lol... all from garden!! lol!!!
But some people oppose to this language. Why? because they are so conservative!
Re: The Turning Point In PhysicsGRE.com History! 4-15-2008
To clarify: I think I argued for self-censorship of provocative, non-politically correct posts. But never for explicit filtering of swear words -- I'm pretty sure I wrote a post against that.
