"And now we play the waiting game..."

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

"And now we play the waiting game..."

Post by GCS » Mon Jan 14, 2008 12:03 pm

I think a lot of people around here were already done with their stuff...

But about half of my apps were due on the 15th, so I've been working up to now.
Anyways, I just wanted to share my excitement/relief to be done with everything and just get to sit down and "relax".
At least there's no need to worry about what needs to be finished up anymore... although now I don't know what to do with all this extra time I have.

Round of shots for everybody!!

I'd enjoy a nice Stoli and tonic...

although after the whole application process a couple shots of straight tequila might be more fitting

ditto GCS

I've got a nice double shot of Jameson here!

still working on that last app though...trying to figure out how many jobs you can list on your cv without it being excessive. I highly doubt admissions committees care that I was a nanny to a six year old who tried to beat me with his playstation controller...spoiled kids and the stupid parents who don't know better...

Yeah I only listed jobs relevant to physics and education...

I didn't say that I worked one day per week back in 11th grade at a bakery to satisfy my parents who told me I need a job.... It was a pretty brutal job, greasing pans nonstop 10pm to 6:30am in uncomfortable conditions, so I quit and did another job that was more relaxing... but maybe I could have played with the wording a little bit and impressed admissions commitees by calling myself a...

"Metallic interface lubrication engineer."

I can't stand the taste of beer, wine or shots... but I really like those fruity mixed drinks... or hard lemonade.

nope  actually when I first wrote the statement, I said "girly fruity mixed drinks," but deleted "girly" so no females would feel the need to prove the generalization incorrect...

I thought throwing in "hard lemonade" would save my manhood... maybe I should've said "Mike's hard lemonade"

I take so much criticism at school when I order an appletini, lol!

Mike's hard lemonade would not save your manhood, I'm sorry. You'll have to take that double shot of Jameson to redeem yourself. You may need to take a shot of Johnny Walker red label after that, just to put some hair on your chest.

hahahha, funny,
you gotta *** a girl to prove your manhood (I just could not find better wording for this sentence, i hope I din offend anybody) and if you want to prove that you r a stron man, yo gotta go to the gym, lift some weight! if you want more, fly to Amsterdam for marijuana, and all other varieties of weeds. Drinking red label aint anything. Last night I made a lil puppy drink tequilla, hehe.

conclusion:
puppy= man ( according to the some of the posts above)
hehehehe

when they call me for interviews, I am thinking of flying to those places carrying weeds with me so that I and Prof can smoke together n then have a little chat about research and all.
This will be so much fun.
The problem is: I cant get in the airport carrying weeds on my bag.
Any suggestions from peolpe out there? Appreciate it.

maybe you're drinking the wrong beers...try a nice Belgium, like Hoegaarden or Stella, or even a random Hefeweizen. They are the "girly" beers, but pretty damn tasty and nothing like budweiser or an IPA.

I think the physics professors are a lot more progressive than they let on. After all, most of them grew up in the 60's and 70's. I've had one prof joke around about taking acid in the 70's, and several others make political comments during class. (ie, we were doing the Ising model in thermo/stat mech and ended up with the system all spin up, represented by black squares. The prof says "and black wins....wow, you almost never see that happen")

So RG, you take some weed and offer it to the professors...and then let one of us take your spot =)

quizivex, ever try a midori sour? they tast just like a watermelon jolly rancher :P yum!

No one likes the taste of hard alcohol, as far as I know, you just drink it to get drunk. Shots are just the quick and dirty method. I'm with you on the beer, but I do love wine!

I don't drink any beer where I can't talk to the brewer personally, so I don't know what mass market brands are out for them, but nothing beats a good IPA in my book except maybe an even better porter.

oh man, anyone who likes IPAs is an adversary in my book!
probably just haven't had a good one yet!

But for someone who doesn't like beer to begin with, IPAs tend to be very intense...all that hoppy bitterness. The lighter beers are usually a good introduction. Hoegaarden tastes almost like a Fresca or Mountain Dew.
Porters are good but heavy - the best I've had was one brewed with Guatemalan coffee beans... get your caffeine and alcohol in one go!

I don't care how antisocial the other physics grads are, I'm making them go out for a beer at least twice a month

is midori sour a beer? If so I haven't tried it and it sounds neat... if it's just a mixed sour drink it's possible I've had it. Back during the freshman year frat parties where all they had was milwaulkee's best... i'd just dump out the beer, fill the can with water and drink that to try to look like I'm fitting in...

There was also a thread last year that included a discussion about drinks... it's funny how a post about an obscure aspect of admissions can evolve into the most random things...

I have a feeling that this spring semester, with all of my classes on Tues-Thurs (thus 4 day weekends), and no acadmic obligations anymore, I'll get introduced to a lot more drinks...

I don't really care anymore what grad school I go to... I just want to go wherever RG goes, I think it'd be out of control craziness funness......

At least this keeps us distracted from stressing about admissions decisions

Talking about beer... for those that like their beer nice and strong, you should try Delirium Tremens (the name should tell you something right then and there),
18 proof beer goodness

I certainly couldn't say yuck if I'd never tried it; I am a scientist. ;)

I've never seen delirium tremens, but i've had a few wee heavies that were >10% abv.

By the way, in response to your post in the other thread, I really do talk like that. You can ask my girlfriend if you like.

Was it Young's Triple Chocolate Stout? That is one of my all time favorite beers. In fact there is only two bars in my town that carry it - you can jump to a conclusion about where I drink.

How many of you here have used Python or using it now?
If so, did u guys ever encounter a problem where it keeps sending an error message that reads like this:
could not connect to IDLE, ........ firewall restriction and something like that..

How do we actually fix this shitty error msg ? Any idea. Appreciate it. Thanx.

RG, I've been doing plenty of programming Python/IDLE for my thesis and I've never encountered that error before... I'd recommend Google.

Yes, I've enjoyed that, excellent. Although I'm partial to the IPAs myself, one of the hoppiest that I've ever tasted was the Paper City Hop Monster. "Imperial IPA with an unreasonable amount of Hops" they say:

Delicious...

ok, not completely girly!
It's not a appletini, but it's also not Arrogant Bastard Ale! I figure any beer that isn't served in a standard pint glass (and tastes delicious to the vast majority of people) is a more feminine beer...I don't know about you, but I always get served Stella in that suped-up wine glass/snifter thingy

@ Peach - yes, it was Young's. If I were better at online stalking, I'd be able to guess where you are from!
