It'd be even cooler if some of the ~1000 students who browse this site regularly without posting anything would introduce yourselves and post a few things

I'm from CA, applying for experimental particle physics with (hopefully) an emphasis on medical physics and/or detector physics. Although my degree is in astrophysics and my work experience is all in particle physics

just curious, anyone else stoked on the orange box? Portal lived up to the Zero Punctuation review beautifully. And who doesn't have fun playing a game where the protagonist is a physicist?!

The Orange Box has been how I've been wasting my break when I'm not writing applications or revising my thesis.

Portal is a entertaining game, and I appreciate the realistic physics. Now if only someone could make an entertaining game based on realistic quantum mechanics...

haha - how great would it be to make a game where you are a random electron..start off in the sun and make your into an electron microscope on earth, and finally annihilate with a positron..in between those be in an indeterminate state..

on second thought, that sounds completely boring
but HL2 is awesome - just started a few days ago and am very impressed with the physics rendering

I always thought a general relativity game would be fun. Like Super Mario Galaxy on steroids.

I'd be careful not to repeat this... this sounds like something ETS would make up a problem based on and put it on the next GRE...

Actually, I'd be happier with any game involving more physics than merely grabbing "energy balls" to shoot into "containment fields" to power things. For all the alleged physics in half-life that seems to be half of it.

there is so much more than that! What about the mechanics of the abandoned cars in the mineshaft are extremely well done (HL2 E2)? Or the individual movements of particles in a system when you blow something up? Or the fact that I was able to defend myself against a zombie using an extremely well rendered flower pot?!
Granted, I've been out of the computer gaming loop for about 7 years so I'm probably raving about what is now considered standard....I'm still impressed!

They even have high schools that specialize in game programming...wish I had gone to one of those

My name is Justin and I am from Ukiah/Chico, California! I am almost done with applications and I have also been slacking on computer/xbox games until school starts up again. I am interested in HEP theory but I doubt with my intelligence I will get into a program. Ok, I am getting way too depressing...

Yup I did! I graduated in 2003. I transferred there as a sophmore though so I doubt we saw/knew each other.

I actually didn't have a highschool physics course but I definately heard about him. I was a tad unclear on what I wanted to do with my life back then and didn't care too much about grades. If I was as motivated then as I am now, I would have definately chosen a better university than Chico. The physics faculty is great but it's definatly not the type of school that says, even in modest terms, "wow" to graduate admissions...
