Decision Dates 2017

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Does anyone know anything about Yale physics yet? I'm hoping they'll come to the rescue for me, as I have only heard positive news from UW Physics so far!

Also, are Johns Hopkins, UPenn, Harvard, and Princeton all done with their admissions? I was somewhat surprised not to hear from either Hopkins or Penn...

This admissions season has certainly been a bit of a disappointment for me so far..

I'm happy for everyone who has heard lots of great news! Just hoping to get some of my own soon. :?

I am also waiting to hear from Stony Brook and Brown. I've seen people get accepted to Stony Brook as late as this Friday so I hope they're not done.

Wait, Monday is a holiday? Lincoln's birthday is a thing? I go to school in the states and did not know that that's a thing... Is it actually?
The holiday is President's Day, which is based off Washington's birthday (but not the exact day because it's always a Monday--his birthday is 22 Feb) but also commonly celebrates Lincoln and other Presidents as well. This year the holiday is 20 Feb, not this Monday but next.

Has anyone heard back from Harvard Physics as an experiment applicant? I am seeing some acceptances and rejections from Harvard physics, but most of them seem to be theorists.

I applied for HEP-ex and observational cosmology and have not heard back yet. I am kind of assuming that I got rejected at this point, but wasn't so sure because I've seen mostly theory applicants only.

Still haven't heard anything from Brown myself. With only three acceptances on Grad Cafe, surely they aren't done yet?

When do you think would be reasonable to ask for admission status if I haven't received any email from UIUC or CU Boulder ... beginning of March? :?:

I reached out to the schools I didn't hear back from last week. I think you can make a gentle query asking when applicants should be expecting to hear back.

Did you hear back from Vandy on a time frame for results?
I kinda expected news today/tomorrow based on last year.

I didn't contact them but a friend did. Apparently they started their review process a little later than usual this year. He said that it should be out in maybe two weeks or earlier.

I heard back from Stony Brook on Friday. Not sure if they contacted everyone, though.

Got an email from University of Illinois—Urbana-Champaign at 12:52am saying I was accepted. They are offering a stipend of $22,264 for the 11 months.

I don't think they are done with the admission offers. Given the fact that the gradcafe was full of 'accepted' notification from MIT and Stanford on the last Friday, I expect to see the same amount of postings regarding Harvard on gradcafe if they had really sent out all the decisions, which I don't think I am seeing now.

And I am also in the same situation like you :)

I haven't heard from Cornell yet. It appears from the gradcafe that they rejected a lot of people today. I am getting super nervous. Anyone has an explanation ?

I noticed that most rejections today were CME. There were in addition a hep-th rejection and a CME acceptance. So, based on this, I would surmise their acceptances aren't yet over. I would guess they're more or less proceeding by subfield? Not sure really, I'm as nervous as you are.

Heard from MIT Nuclear Science and Engineering (Plasma Physics). Nothing from Princeton though :( . On Grad Cafe it looks like in the past years they have done two waves and rejections come out at the same time as acceptances so I still have hope.

I just interviewed with UW Astronomy; they said acceptances would start going out next week (in a few waves) aiming for a class size of ~5.

I just got an email from Brown inviting me to some minority admitted grad student visit day (I'm a domestic hispanic applicant), but I haven't yet received any official or unofficial email from the physics department or any professors. Here is the relevant part of the text of the email I received:
On Monday, March 20, Brown Graduate School will host newly accepted students who are members of historically underrepresented groups for a free daylong event. Won't you join us?
Did anyone else get this email?

I'll be completely honest. They're very much done. They had 671 applicants, and accepted + waitlisted 67.

Still waiting on Harvard & Berkeley physics too lol

I am assuming I got rejected from Harvard at this point. With that said, it does seem to be the case that Harvard Physics sent out quite a bit of offers already, but most of the acceptances/rejections I have seen were theorists. Does anyone know of any experiment (especially HEP-ex) candidates who heard back from Harvard?

As far as I know, Berkeley physics has been utterly quiet.

Berkeley had most of their acceptances in late Feb - early March last year, it seems like they're going down the same path this year.
