I just got an e-mail today from UC Santa Cruz saying I've been accepted. Their visiting time is March 15-16.

Me too, accepted to UCSC Astro. What a bizarre time to be sending the e-mail! (10pm pst??)

I was also accepted to UCSC and Columbia for astronomy yesterday.

For people that have heard from UW, has anyone been accepted? I am confused because it seemed like they only emailed out rejections.

I asked a friend at Michigan, and she said when she checked around the admissions people told her they already sent out the first round of acceptances.

newscience, how did Columbia contact you to notify you of admission? I haven't heard from them yet.

I know people have been accepted to a school in Michigan, I'm not sure which one. Also UNC, Chapel Hill has sent acceptances.

There are 8 schools on this list people have heard from that I applied to and haven't heard from and it's driving me nuts. I think I will wait until after I have visited the schools I've been accepted to and then start emailing departments.

The guy I know was accepted to Michigan State, not the University of Michigan.

I have been accepted into several astro grad programs and I am now having some trouble choosing where to go. I figured maybe someone on this forum would have some insight. I am leaning towards observational astrophysics though I am still interested in theory so I need a fairly diverse program.

Anyone have any insight or opinions of any of these astro programs?
UHawaii
UIUC
UCSC
UT
UArizona

Where would you go?
thanks

i'd say ucsc or arizona they both have real strong connections to telescopes and their theory is pretty good too

momo, you should not go to Hawaii or UCSC because I applied to them and I need your spot! :P

what are the typical TA stipends at the places you've been admitted to?
so far i've seen offers around 15k, is this low?

@epsi

It depends on the location of the University to which you were accepted to. UIUC has a stipend of ~17k while Yale has one ~26k. I think it all depends on cost of living and such.

I wish the stipend were more dependent on cost of living! I've had about $30K across the board- goes a lot farther in Tucson than New York City.

Got accepted at Chicago last Friday. I guess they're sending out their second round of acceptances.

Anyone else still waiting for UW - madison and MIT?

I have heard a few people talk about MIT but not really for astro. And I haven't heard much at all about madison.

I am anxious to know if no news is waitlisted news

thanks

Yup, I too am waiting to hear from UW-Madison. Hopefully this means that we're waitlisted...either that or they're really slow.

I read on thegradcafe.com, there is one post of rejection of Havard Astronomy thru website.

Does anyone know how to view decision on the web ? (if yes, where can I find it ? or are they really posting decision somewhere? since people are just talking about Harvard's snail mail...

Anyone have any news from UW-Madison?

I have heard nothing since confirmation back in early January.

It is the last school that I am waiting to hear from so I am ready to stop checking my email 5 times a day. :)

thanks

Someone posted on gradcafe that they were accepted to UW-Madison on Feb. 18. I wonder where we stand then?

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from the University of Washington? I am so frustrated with them. They haven't responded to my email about my application status in the last two days- at least have the courtesy to respond, guys. I don't understand how I was admitted to Princeton and UW won't give me the time of day.

I finally heard from Madison .

I just got accepted into their astro program.

Thats it for me. I have now heard from all of my schools and I can stop checking my email and mailbox 5 times a day.

Now that the wait is over I can resume the great trek across the country to visit the programs before making a choice next month.

thanks and good luck everyone who is still waiting to hear.

I've been flying mostly blind on this "where ARE astro schools anyway?" thing. I basically started with location and started narrowing it down from there. Very, very slow process. This at least gives me quite a few to hunt down! I hope you are accepted where you want to go ^.^

Got a letter from Penn State (rejection) saying that they had finished all their admissions decisions, if anyone else was still waiting to hear back from them.

I emailed some programs I applied to and here's some info I heard back.

Cornell: "We are still processing a number of applications, including yours, and realistically we expect the assessment and review process to continue for another month or so."

UCSC: "If you have not heard from the admissions committee yet, you may assume that you have not been admitted. The official notifications will go out sometime next week. We had well over 120 applicants and could only admit 20."

U of Washington's website says they won't talk about till after April 15.
