Applied physics vs Physics - Difference??

Though it maybe already discussed, but I still want to ask opinions about what's difference between applying to Applied Physics Department instead of Physics Department?
Basically, if anybody can tell me the differences in acceptance policies and factors that they emphasize on more/less as compared to traditional Physics program? Also any specific advice/information for international student.
