I just talked with the lady in the office at Maryland, and she said she just received a huge number of acceptances from the committee -- she said it "seemed like more than last year". She said she will be sending them out today and tomorrow and all the acceptances should be done by the end of this week. She also said they are doing nationals first. (I'm not sure why they do that?). My fingers are crossed.

Hmmm! I'd bet that the first round (~24th-25th) was just the fellowship offers then, judging by the profiles thread.

yeah! Last year 15 acceptances. This year 25. That's a HUGE number, much more than last year. There were only 600 applications anyway!

Not quite, my email said, "Since there were over 700 applications this year for an entering class of about 30 students in our Department, the Committee's recommendation for your admission reflects their high regard for the strength of your academic record and ability."

If the entering class is 30, I think they accept about 90 according to discussions in previous threads regarding 1/3 of students accepting offers.

Sorry if I got a bit over-excited. This lady was kindof funny. (She said she was spending all day sending out acceptances) I think she gave me false hope. =/

and you gave me false hope, so I e-mailed her and I received no answer yet! lol-ish

That's for Berkeley. Maybe for Maryland, it's 1/4?

In my country there was a joke about a soviet radio station and how they distorted news... Now, you're reaaaally going very close to this.
Main News: UMD is sending out a LOT more acceptances BUT
1. it's not really a LOT
2. there aren't acceptances
3. they aren't really sending them
4. it's not really UMD, It's Berkley

Gradschoolshopper says last year 122 out of 660 were accepted. If it's more than 122 acceptances, and probably about 700 applicants, that's a pretty decent percentage. A rough guess could be between 1/5th and 1/4th.

Answer from UMD:

"We do not have wait lists. I am still making admission offers and it will take me until next Monday to do all of them."

suppose there are a LOT if it takes until next Monday...

You are still emailing people? Seriously, if I were trying to deal with 700 applications and someone kept bugging me, I'd be tempted to put their application in the trash.

no no no... this e-mail was old. She answered only today and I won't email anymore! By the way, I don't think she can give us any clues about the decision because of the simple reason that she doesn't know anything as well. I guess it's just a person that got a pile of offers that she has to send to people. Sort of secretary job. Let's say there are 100 admissions... it would be nonsense to search for a name after each e-mail. I personally understand that!

not by snail-mail! They always told me it's by e-mail...
I can't imagine any other texts more dramatically interpreted than graduate committee e-mails! I mean, poor Linda, If she only knew how are we interpreting her messages? (Oh my GOD, was there a comma or a semicolon?! )
Or things like :"why did she told me that? Why to me? Why in that way?does that mean that I have a chance? Or no chance at all?"
