astronomy updates/acceptances

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Just got waitlisted by Chicago. Better than a rejection I guess!

For those of you waiting to hear back from Cornell Astronomy...I called the guy I want to work with a few days ago and asked if he had heard anything about admissions. He said that the only offers sent out so far are for the very top students, and that the rest of the decisions will probably be complete by the end of next week.

Of course, "probably" indicates that "the end of next week" is flexible. But I thought I should let everyone know in case anyone else has been constantly worried about not hearing anything (like me) and wanted to know what's going on with the admissions committee.

thanks for the info! I wonder if that's how most admissions committees do their acceptances.

word, I read that but I thought it might be a little different for astro departments because the size of the applicant pool is smaller... I think.

ooooh ok. I always lump them together in my mind but I guess there's no reason to assume they would necessarily be the same given a much smaller application pool.

Got into the University of Oklahoma today. I've gotten into all of my safety schools now, let's see if I can get into some of the better ones too!

Hehehe. Hey, one of my safety schools is actually one of my top choices! I've even already gotten in there! It's my top "small department" pick. (I don't know if I want to be in a big dept or a small dept next year.)

I received an email from Hawaii today telling me that I am wait-listed. It said:

"You are on our waiting list for admission to the Institute for
Astronomy's graduate program. We have made offers of admission to a
first group of applicants, and are waiting to determine the outcome of
these offers before proceeding further. There is a good chance we can
offer you admission, although we may need to wait until fairly close
to the April 15 deadline before we can be sure one way or the other."

Anyone going to the Cornell Astro open house? It's in just under a month now, and I'm wondering about where to stay etc. since they don't seem to offer much (if any) assistance.

Thanks!

Haha I think you're just about the only person on this forum to even hear back from Cornell Astro yet...so I'd say yeah if I knew I was in, but I don't know yet. Might want to wait a week or so for any solid answers from anybody else on this one :P

:) Maybe. I was hoping there would be some lurkers (I lurked on this site for years before posting for the first time) who might speak up. Good luck though, hope you hear back soon!

I'm in a conundrum regarding Arizona. Their website and application said that you would be notified about your status by Feb 12 and "likely quite a bit earlier." I received emails telling me this and that my application was complete and being reviewed back in January. Unfortunately, I've heard nothing! I tried emailing them, waited a week with no response, emailed again, and still no response. I know that they have accepted and rejected people, so what's the deal? Any suggestions?

Rejected from Berkeley yesterday, that's 3 big schools in 3 days.

On another note, I'm still waiting to hear from Santa Cruz. I'm pretty sure I've been rejected since I never got an interview but it would be nice if they would send out official rejections already.

Are you saying the applicant pool for astronomy programs are inadequate? This is kind of offensive you know. I don't think astronomers are inadequate.

obvious troll is obvious

That's really strange if we both haven't heard anything. Actually, on gradcafe, there are only 2 decisions this year from harvard, so we might not be alone. I don't know if you requested the administrative assistant to look into your case to see whether a decision was actually made, but keep us posted!

Yes, when I said the applicant pool was smaller, I was clearly referring to the sizes of their penises. Everyone knows that astronomers have microscopic genitalia. Why else would they be obsessed with the largest things in the universe?

Also, unrelated, they said they have my email and would email me, but did not give a time frame in which they would. Seeing as it's already 5 there I guess it's not going to be today.

Lol, YellowXDart, go browse some of the classic 2008 threads. Discussions like these were the norm and probably only like 10% of all posts pertained to anything relevant to the original purpose of the forum. Ah such great memories.

At last! Rejected from Santa Cruz. Now I can breathe a big sigh of relief since I have officially heard from all of my schools. I wasn't able to get into my top choices (again), but at least I got in SOMEWHERE, and ASU seems really awesome.

Good luck to the rest of you still waiting to hear back!

(And on a happier note, ASU just offered me a $4000 fellowship in addition to my stipend.)
