astronomy updates/acceptances

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Good luck to the rest of you still waiting to hear back!

(And on a happier note, ASU just offered me a $4000 fellowship in addition to my stipend.)
Whew, it must feel good to have all your options on the table. Eff this waiting game!

Congrats on the fellowship... so is it ASU for sure then, or are you going to check out the other open houses before you decide?

Definitely not enjoying the waiting game. I still have to hear back from BU astro, UNM physics/astro (same dept), berkeley physics, montana state u physics, UW aero engineering and CU aero engineering. *sigh*

I feel like there's a huge weight off of my shoulders now. I haven't yet made a decision since I still have 3 schools to visit, but I LOVED ASU when I went to visit last weekend so they're the top contender as of right now.

unrelated, no response at all. I even emailed them again and asked them if they would let me know about the situation with the decisions. Maybe you should try contacting them so they know it's more than one person who didn't get an word, I called the graduate coordinator.

Also I forgot my stupid UCSC login password, but it is more than likely that I got rejected.

hm, maybe they're just busy. Did you email Donna or Peg? Perhaps an email straight to Jim Moran, who heads the admissions committee is in order.

I called and emailed Donna, and she was very nice on the phone. An email to Jim Moran may be a good idea, or maybe even a phone call.

EDIT: I suppose I understand that they may be busy and that's why I haven't heard back from them, but if the decisions were already made, I can't imagine it would take someone too long to just look it up and let me know, I feel like it may be something more problematic.

Wow. Guess that's plus one on my "people Donna is actually nice to list". It's been stuck at 2.5 for over 2 years.

unrelated, bad news, so it turns out there was some sort of miscommunication and what was actually meant is that all acceptances were sent out three weeks ago, in other words, we're F'd and I got an email today from Peggy clarifying it.

Just had my interview for Oxford's DPhil program in Astrophysics. Now all I want to do is open a bottle of chardonnay and sleep!

Is there anybody here who applied to Chicago astro, and hasn't received an acceptance, rejection, or a wait list email?

Applied to nine schools (in astronomy), rejected by five of them, anxiously waiting to hear from four.
They are: U Wisconsin, U Illinois Urbana Champaign, U Hawaii, New Mexico State.

I've read this entire thread so it's "interesting" to note that Wisconsin has sent out both acceptances and rejections. And Hawaii has sent out acceptances and waitlist notifications. And NMSU has sent out preliminary acceptances. So I'm either on a few waitlists or a few "we forgot about you" lists. Anybody out there apply to UIUC and hear anything yet?

[rant] ARRRRGHHH so frustrating I just want to get into ONE school!! I'm sorry I suck at the Physics GRE, where is the "plays nice with others" box I can check in lieu of that?? [/rant]

Waitlisted by Cornell, just got an email, first I've heard from them since applying.

there is a fair chance that I won't. It's pretty much contingent on what hawaii has to say. They should get back to me very soon though so I'll make my decision soon.

Makes sense...I didn't mean to badger you about it or anything...I just jumped at hearing some new information haha

ah, I didn't mean to sound so terse. I just didn't want to seem like I'm just pooping around with my time not making any decisions, because I know there are a bunch of people still waiting.

Finally heard back from University of Exeter! Accepted + tuition waiver + stipend + possible laboratory instructor position if I have time! Research is in star formation.

Wow, it took FOREVER! But I'm happy. :D
