LHC & Graduate School

This year has the potential to be a 'lucky' year for those of us who are entering into the world of HEP.

LHC will be turning on towards summer and results could start coming out by summer 2011 (~2 yrs) which will roughly be the same time that this years group will start doing research.

Congrats to those who got in (I'm still waiting).

Isn't that what they said last year, and the year before that?

But this year, this won't happen:

Considering nothing happens there'll be some new stars in both theory/expt. :D

Possibly the brains behind SUSY as well, or, the expt. guys could open an unchartered territory.

i meant famous to the public not the community. The problem is that all these collaborations are so huge you can't pick out a single person

Well, the current stated goal is to have data by late 2009... personally, I'll be happy if I am still in school when the LHC starts taking data

Yea, some people seem to be getting pretty nervous. CDF/D0 are definitely not conceeding. They already excluded the Higgs at 170 GeV. That would be a nightmare for CERN if the Tevatron found it, because it may indeed be the only discovery that can possibly be made.

A somewhat mischievous part of me kind of hopes that Fermilab has found a Higgs signature and is waiting until just after the LHC starts up again to publish.
