Still Waiting 2009.... Share your ambivalence!

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Out of curiosity, Isnt the new budget supposed to help fund STEM graduate students? If so doesnt that mean Fall 2009 is going to get the biggest screw in admission due to available positions to applicants.

i guess that is what programs are waiting for to be clarified. I still have to hear from 5 and i think it is a funding problem.

Is the money for the upcoming federal budget even going to be able to be used for the fall of 2009.
Is the budget going to be passed by April 15th?

I dont think it is going to have any effect on Fall 2009 admissions. Fall 2009 applicants are screwed.

For all those waiting for UWash, I called and got this email reply:

Admissions decisions are still being made, though our admission offers have significantly slowed down. We will still be making a few offers, but not many more, and you will be notified immediately via email if you are admitted. All our admissions decisions should be made by March 30^th .

Thank you for your interest in the UW Physics PhD program, and best of luck with your graduate school search.

Sincerely,

Jen Lehner

It's not like that, because schools known that on average, x% of the people they offer admission to will decline. Now this year they were more conservative it seems than in previous years, but they still offer admission to more people than they can afford because they know some will decline. Names are only pulled off the waitlist if enough people decline that they know for sure that their incoming class size would be smaller than their target class size. So it is very possible that six people will decline and no names will be pulled off the waitlist. What you are waiting for is for them to get enough responses -- accepts and declines -- that they *know* their target class will be short by six or more.

Mr. Griffin,

We have sent out our first round of acceptance letters, and it appears that
the department may be full. We are not entirely sure of this and should have
a better idea next month. If you have received offers from other
universities, you may want to consider them. You will be notified of the
department's decision on your application in the middle of April.

I sent them an e-mail to ask this question and they just simply said the department is full and "no longer accepting any more applicants", and say they will keep my file for next year application...

Does that mean there is a rank in this WL?

Of course I don't care about it anymore.

Is anyone STILL waiting on Rutgers? NYU? When I called, they couldn't tell me, and the website still says no decision for me. This sucks!!!!

so I've heard from everywhere except McMaster University. Now my only acceptance so far is from UBC who said I didn't have to notify them until June so thats ok. But I'm getting impatient. I submitted my complete application to mcmaster in January even though their deadline wasn't until March 31st. I was told they would start meeting in early february. Now I emailed them in March and the admin chair said they were still deciding on my app but he'd try and hurry things along, that was 3 1/2 weeks ago.

So what do I do? I want to decide and start making plans but I would consider their offer if they made one so I want to know soon. I don't know if this is typical of canadian universities or if they do things differently. I don't want to bug them too much....when should i contact them again or should i at all??? Any opinions?

evilclaw2321, why do you doubt on UBC than Mcmaster? I can tell you UBS is definitely higher both in ranking and research programs.

Well I'm very happy with UBC's program, I'm just curious about Mcmaster accepting me. I know UBC is higher ranking and larger dept and whatnot but theres a couple good faculty members at mcmaster that are doing work im really interested in. So I'm not saying I'd pick them over UBC I just want to know a final answer and if its a yes see if theres for sure any other reasons to sway me.

Why? Didn't they increase the money for STEM?
