"Sample courses taken: Military art theory, Cultivation of ethnics (that one scares me quite a bit), Culture of USA (barely passed), Plutonomy, Moral Accomplishment for Students, Mao Zedong Thoughts (quite a spread in grades there), Special Physical Education (the semester after failing Mao's Thoughts)..."

What is it with admissions committee members making value judgements about what classes their applicants are taking? Seriously, weren't these people required to take general electives? And who cares if a student got a C in Plutonomy if they got an A in Advanced Topics in Physics?

And what's wrong with "Cultivation of ethnics?" Hey, they're not going to grow themselves...

HAhahahhahah, great stuff. Reminds me of admissionprof's experience:
admissionprof wrote:The funniest sentence in a personal statement came from a foreign applicant with poor English, who had discussed how his interest in physics grew. As a child, he had done various experiments with the beam of sunlight coming in his room (and pieces of glass, etc.). He then built a little lab in his room. Later in his personal statement he was discussing his desire to do experimental physics, and said "My bedroom experiments taught me a lot about the proper use of my hands".

The problem is, like marajuana, ethnics are illegal in some uncivilized countries.

So while reading this I realized I know this professor. It surprised me that he'd write something like this, in person he seems like a such nice and understanding person, not snooty or anything. Great one more professor from my department to add to the list of people to avoid.
