I emailed Charmarie Burke asking whether i can come during the week of march 16th to 21st because that is my spring break and their spring break and she sent me the dates

Unfortunately, that is our Spring Break as well. There may be some people here, if you let me know who you'd like to meet, I can check with them.

We are having our weekends Feb. 27-28 and March 13-14 - maybe you could come here that last Friday before the break? If not, we may be able to schedule a separate visit for you - outside of our recruitment weekends.

Let me know what you decide.

Thanks,
Char

Yes!!

Austin bars are the best (I'm from a school in Houston, TX so I've been to Austin for the music festival Austin City Limits multiple times, it's AWESOME).

Helio, are you going to the Feb or March Open House for UT?

Negative. The best bar ever is in the (das?) Essen Haus in Madison Wisconsin, and it will feature prominently in the UW-Madison physics visiting weekend.

Come prepared.

I believe there should be a competition amongst the different subfields, CM vs. HEP vs. Astro etc., and the first team to finish an entire boot wins. Professors should also participate.

People none of this americanized bastardization of a pub can get close to cambridge pub or a german pub...

Sry I am spoiled when it comes to bars and beer, I spend my HS time in bars... Thank god for a drinking age of 16 :P

And yes it should be Das Essen Haus

On my trip to Munich I found the Paulaner Beer Garden to be the most enjoyable experience. But you certainly can't go wrong with Augustiner or even the touristy Hofbrauhaus.

Augustiner does probably have the coolest atmosphere for a beer garden, and I believe it is the largest. So I can't disagree with you :D

Well, if you like the music/corny atmosphere at the Hbh then you'll like the Essen Haus... But I'll agree that many great watering holes are not stateside.

Damn you were not being typically american and removed the casing of the sausage. The ones i was in munich did not understand the concept of having a sausage in a pork intestin and that you are not supposed to eat cause it throws the taste off. Did you learn how to zuttel? :P

Well I will spend my time before grad school at home in my bed because i am getting knee surgery and will be on crutches for 6+ weeks.... go me

Well, I lived in Bavaria for a month during high school, so I learned how to handle such things (there is sausage with inedible/edible but bad tasting casing stateside, but it isn't as common). Unfortunately, my German has atrophied to the point where I can only speak it after drinking a lot of beer... (So my guess is that my answer to your question is 'no' since I don't recall what 'zuttel'ing is). At least those 6 weeks will give you opportunity to prepare for qualifying exams...

well i might not need one depending on where I go... if i go to austin my qual is a presentation. zutteln when you eat the sausage by biting into it without breaking the casing and pulling out the meat part

if you look in the upper right corner, the link that brings you to the page your looking at says "open House 2009", you click that and it brings you to that page I showed you. I guess your right, those dates are 2008, but way for them to be confusing.

NP... it just seems weird to make a visiting weekend on sunday and monday as well.

Umm, so you guys need to look a bit closer. The columbia open house in fact seems to be on 29-30:

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/physics/grad ... ities.html

In the above link you can see that it was on sunday and monday last year too and they have switched part of the dates but forgot to fix the link names at the top. The point is that it says that the open house is on Sunday the 29th. Note that if it was referring to last year the 29th would be a Saturday.
