April 15 and multiple offers

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

April 15 and multiple offers

Post by astroprof » Sat Jan 05, 2019 7:49 pm

Congratulations to those of you who are starting to receive offers of admission and financial support for graduate study! For those of you who are fortunate enough to have multiple offers in hand, I encourage you to consider each of them thoughtfully and to take the opportunity to visit schools before making your decision. Also, as you may know, most of the graduate schools in the United States and Canada are members of the Council of Graduate Schools, and are signators to the April 15 Resolution (https://cgsnet.org/april-15-resolution). Thus, if you receive a offer of financial support, you may have until April 15 to reach a decision. However, some faculty may not be aware that their school is a member of the Council of Graduate Schools (particularly non-US schools...), so may pressure you to reply before April 15. If that is the case, I recommend looking to see if the School is a member, and then asking them to abide by the Resolution (only if they are members, of course!). At the same time, if you know that you will not attend a particular school, please notify them as soon as you have reached this decision - there is no need to wait. Again, congratulations and welcome to graduate school!
