Best way to prepare for vocab

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Best way to prepare for vocab

Post by noospace » Sat Feb 23, 2008 8:41 pm

Hi all,

I know this is generally not considered to be the make-or-break part of our applications but this should be potentially the easiest part of the exam to study for.

Do you have any preferred method for studying vocab? I'm considering flash-cards because every day I walk for (15+15) min to university during which I generally space out.

So far these are the websites I've compiled relevant to the vocab section:

http://www.wordflashonline.com/qz/free- ... b-test.php
http://gre-new-words.blogspot.com/
http://www.msu.edu/~defores1/gre/vocab/gre_vocab.htm
this one you seem to need to pay for: http://www.thenewgre.com/
and of course the free rice website :)
http://www.freerice.com/index.php

Are any of these better than the others for GRE prep? Is there some authoritative list online somewhere that is considered better to study from?

Thanks.

Does anyone have word on this? I thought I remembered a website that had like 10,000 GRE vocab words, and it was supposed to be a definitive list or something...

Ugh... I'm rereading this and I've made a horrible pun. I apologize. Completely unintentional.

When I took the GRE, I relied more on the word roots and affixes that I knew rather than the specific words I studied. I don't think I got more than two words that I actually studied, but I was able to figure out the meanings of many of the hard ones by taking them apart. That's also how I succeed at FreeRice  My preferred method was virtual flash cards, I think I googled "gre word roots virtual flashcards" or something like that. Sorry I can't find the site I used anymore.

I just got a GRE prep book from the library and made a big list of all of the vocab in that. I studied it a lot and had my girlfriend quiz me a lot (it helps that she got something like a 780 on the verbal practice test), and my score went up a fair amount.
