Fall 2008 Open House Information

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

According to the e-mail I received today Rutgers has no official open house. It is a schedule-your-own-visit kind of deal.

Thanks, everyone! This is coming along really well.

I would like to see more forum members signing up for the open houses in this post though. I know more of you are going. Perhaps you want to remain anonymous, but that is still quite possible even with your name on this post.

Brown has no visiting weekends. They give you $500 for travel related expenses and arrange for one night stay in the hotel. What a pathetic open house! Brown is a shame in the name of IVY.

@ grae and xdebugger

i see that both of you are also visiting Berkeley and then UCSB - i guess you're going to fly down from berkeley to santa barbara on the afternoon/night of the 3rd? do you guys know which airport i should fly into/out of for berkeley - the oakland one or the san francisco one? also, when you plan your flights, let me know about what time you'll be flying down the coast - it would probably be a lot easier if a few people were going around the same time so we can all go to the airport together (i suck at figuring out public transportation/shuttles/etc.)

Oakland airport is much closer to Berkeley and a little bit larger so finding flights should be easier. I live in San Jose though (about 50 minutes south of Berkeley), so I'll probably go home after Berkeley gets through and fly out of SJ International. But yeah, I'm planning to fly down there on the night of the 3rd.

yo nvanmeter (not to destroy your forum anonymity),

If you recall when we took the Caltrain to San Fran, the San Francisco airport has a BART subway terminal that would take you directly and easily to Berkeley for cheap. My friend lives in Oakland and flies into San Francisco because the flights (at least out of the northeast) are generally cheaper.

Also: Yale, Michigan (weekend 1), or UC Boulder anyone? I like the fact that Yale's open house weekend starts out at a Bar. I'll be sure to get too drunk and make a fool of myself.

I see that aanaa asked this earlier, but no one seems to have responded, so I will ask again. Does Berkeley reimburse for flights, and do they arrange for hotels? My letter didn't say anything about that. I will email them and ask.

My letter didn't mention it. I think I've heard from others in the past that Stanford and Berkeley usually fly people up jointly to save costs, but the dates are different enough this year that I'd guess that isn't the case.

@ but
berkeley said in my letter that they arrange for you to stay with a graduate student who will be your "personal guide" and that they reimburse for your flight.

OK, I think I got everyone who posted updates. Thanks again and keep them coming!

Looks like we've got some good open house lists forming. If you are attending one of these and aren't on the list yet, let me know! Also, whoever is coming to stanford's open house is welcome to my living room floor (bring a sleeping bag), the hot tub in my condo complex, and the ping pong table. Pancakes for breakfast, anyone? Quizivex, you should come to stanford's open house. You can't turn down stanford without visiting, can you?

I will be attending the MIT Physics open house March 19-20.

I know this isn't strictly Physics but can anyone confirm that MIT Nuclear Science and Engineering open house is this coming weekend, March 7-9? I'm still holding out hope for that program. (User "1420 Peach" said that the open house was March 7-9 in the "MIT" thread but before I despair too much I'd like to confirm this.)
