Fall 2008 Open House Information

Posted: Sat Feb 16, 2008 9:58 pm
by grae313
This is meant to be a repository for Fall 2008 open house information.

I will update this first post periodically with dates of open houses as they become known. Along with the dates of each school's open house, I thought it would be neat to continue hpharty's idea and include the names of the forum members here who are planning to attend.

Please post if you know the dates of an open house not included or if you plan to attend an open house listed here. If there is a university you are interested in that is not included, please let me know.

not sure if you meant post here, but you can of course just delete my post if you want afterwards. here's what i know:

MIT: March 19-20
UC San Diego: April 4-5
U Illinois: March 7-8 or April 4-5
UC Santa Barbara: April 4 (my letter didn't mention the 3rd or 5th)

yes, go ahead and post here and I'll update the first thread!

Thanks!

nvanmeter, which of these are you planning on attending?

For Minnesota, # 1 March 28-29 and # 2 April 4- 5

EDIT: sorry grae313, I forgot to mention. I will be at Minnesota on April 4-5.

thanks, VT. are you attending either of those?

nvanmeter, you are turning down MIT? :o niiiice. way to *** off the school with damn committee! garden would be proud.

grae313, I do not think nvanmeter is turning down MIT. He is simply turning down UCSD over UCSB cuz both of them have the same visiting days!

NOOOOO... this is sacrilege... you have misquoted the great garden!!!!!

it is "*** off the school with damn committee."

Because you forced an extra "the" in there, this whole thread must be cast into the lounge forever :(

It was a good idea while it lasted...

hell no, i'm not turning down MIT. but March 19-20 is right in the middle of my spring break vacation which was planned long before this grad school visiting day....south padre island woohoo!!! so i'll visit MIT (and harvard if i get in) some other time before april 15.

OSU: March 6-7, I guess you can put that I'll be there.

Indiana: March 22

EDIT: I looked up the date for Indiana. It's the 22nd. I'm still not going though.

OK, my bad nvanmeter

I edited my garden post, and now I am so ashamed. the lack of a "the" before "damn committee" is extremely important because it leads to all sorts of ambiguity. Are we supposed to use a "damn committee" as the tool to "*** off the school," or are we supposed to *** off the schools that have a damn committee?

the ambiguity is meant to be there and you are right, it was sacrilege to change it!

The answer is clear. You must use the committee to *** off the school. I imagine you'd have them line up single file in a doorway and back them in and out until the school was satisfied.

Harvard Astronomy: there is no open house. Admitted students can arrange to go anytime. The department actually does prefer to talk to admits one at a time.

UW astronomy: first one around (feb 28-march 2); second one around April 3-6.

Caltech already had their "open house" (Interviews where pretty much everyone who goes gets an offer) and Yale's open house is the weekend of March 28-30th.

I have no interest in going to Cornell for grad school, but I would love to go to Cornell's open house just to meet all the characters here that are going...

I don't think reverse psychology will work on multigoal... he is determined to take over the forum with his profile...

AHAHHAHAHAHA!!!

The ambiguity in garden's words is what makes them so beautiful... he meant both things at the same time.

Sorry if this is an inane question, but is the Cornell Open House that's March 28-29 for Applied Physics or Physics? I applied to Applied Physics but am still waiting to hear back re: my admission status. Thanks!

yeah, I got into Carnegie Mellon too, but I am not going to thier openhouse. I applied to way too many schools without thinking.

Surely you must have realized you applied to too many schools after the countless hours you surely spent on your applications. That is a serious list you have!

I was way too nervous to ask professors to write that many letters.

hpharty,
I did not spend much time on the last 6 schools on my list. I send the same statement everywhere, and later I realized some of them even had mixed up names and all that.

Good luck to you with the visit.

I noticed my Yale statement lacked a period at the end of one paragraph. Perhaps that's why I was rejected.

University of Michigan has two open house weekends, one the weekend of March 21st and the other the weekend of March 28th.

University of Virginia is not having an open house, admitted students arrange their own visits with financial support.

Stony Brook didn't mention an open house in their email, but they are mailing out the details later.
