UCSB said the final decision is out next week, they just told me they missed my transcripts and I need fax it. This is messed up! I asked last month, they told me they had it.

Here's my prediction: next week the light finally turns green... only to reject us.

I think it needs to reject me tomorrow to put a nice end cap on my week.

Sounds like your going through what I went through after finding out the summer and semester long study bindge for the GRE resulted in a 65%....

Well, I asked one of the prof connection about decision, since it seems many people got admitted already. Then he told me not to worry, they haven't finish the final decision.

I guess what they mean is next week, they will have a complete list of who get in and not. But still takes sometime for the secretary to update and send email.

So, my guess is they sent the offer first, then don't bother rush to send the rejection. may be reject comes the week after.

I received my acceptance from UCSD by email today, but website still hasn't been updated. Makes it seem like all that time spent checking website was a waste, if they aren't going to post the status there.

Do you think UCSB updates the site before they send out emails? If not, then there isn'tmuch point in checking everyday.

I thought some people's button lit up before the email, if I recall correctly. RG, if you're out there, how did you find out?

butsurigakusha, w/ your stats I'm surprised you weren't an early admit for UCSB.

the button lights up first (at least for me) but then you receive the email within a few hours. so checking the website isn't going to help much unless saving those extra few hours is important to you.

Every second is important to me.

@fermiboy
The ones who got early admits seem to have something that I'm missing, like first author publications, or grad level classes

Yeah I could use those things myself. My department doesn't even had a graduate program, so no grad classes. I also didn't know about the importance of REUs (away from one's home institution) until it was too late.

So what's the deal with UCSB? Someone said that they had finalized their decisions but were still sending them out? Is it over, or could they still be updating the online status?

longtime lurker... but, accepted to UCSB around 4:30PM-ish EST. By e-mail, and in fact, the Decision Available link is still grey.

Figured I was done too, but just got an acceptance bout a half hour ago. (Still no 'decision available' on their website.)

Peder confirmed that it wasn't done yet, so I guess they're still some hope.

Trust me, it ain't done. You can call Kerri Johnson yourself for confirmation from her, but I also got confirmation from a couple professors.

@peder,

"Kerri Johnson"? Did you mean Kerri O'Connor??? But it really seems like UCSB has accepted several dozen people already.

Peder, so what exactly is going on with UCSB, I thought u said they finished all decision last week, why does it take multiple days to send out to people?

Re: UCSB

by peder
I'm not too sure. My contact had said that they were all sitting in a pile on the chair's desk, and I can only surmise that they're doing it on a rolling basis. Point being, not all admissions are out yet at this time.

completely blind guess here... but maybe the decisions by the department are done, but they need to get each one approved by the graduate school and that takes time; thus sending out emails as they get all the paperwork done???

@ AstroMan

Yeah, that's what I imagine is coming. If only they'd deign to make it official...

EDIT: Last year it looks like they let loose the rejections the first business day in March, so we may know tomorrow. However, there does appear that they had a wait list in past years. Guess that's what I'm hoping for at this point.

Yeah, but they haven’t, as far as I know, sent any kick yet. If they have 500 applicants and 20 are admitted then 480 are in the wait list!!!!
Man.. I bet you we are in waste list.

So peder, I guess your inside connection is cold now that you got in? :D

I tried calling earlier today, but my call to graduate admissions went straight to voice-mail... I'll try again tomorrow.

It would be nice to know so I can figure out my return flight from Berkeley.

Sorry, I haven't bothered asking.

As I understand it, I was one of the last to get in. Right now it depends on people accept or turn down UCSB in large numbers.

I tried calling again today, but my call went straight to Kerri O'Connor's voicemail.

When I wrote in an email, I got back the auto-response:
Greetings Applicant!

At this time, we are no longer accepting supplemental materials or updates
to applications as all applications are currently being reviewed.

If you have any questions regarding the application process, please visit
our website at:

Best wishes,

Are they really unable to get me anything more personal than that? :(

Can someone else who's waiting try calling for the timeframe? I already wrote the email so I don't want to call again now in case I get through. The direct number is 805-893-4646.

I think Kerri might not be in today. I remember talking to one of my sources and recalling that there are some days that Kerri is not in? I could be mistaken...

On a different note, I couldn't help but look up the states on gradschool shopper

UCSB
Admitted: 62
Firstyear Enrolled: 11
17% yield

Berkeley
Admitted: 99
Firstyear Enrolled: 33
33% yield

Are such low yields typical?

yes. 25 to 33 percent, very typical for upper tier schools.

I think it makes sense. Many people who get in to Berkely also get in to other top places, but no one can attend more than one, so the others get turned down.

Why it seems like everyone on this forum who got in UCSB are for CM or other fields, but not High Energy? There is one person got into CMT/HET. Everyone who apply only high energy are still waiting.
