Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I have no idea when they are supposed to let us know. I definitely sent that application in over three months ago though. COME ON!
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I haven't heard from either, only Syracuse, Davis and Rutgers have been nice enough to reply to my emails.
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
@ jdhooghe and those who are waiting for Davis

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
When and how did you hear from Maryland, jdhooghe! sorry to hear that.
Do not give up hope. You can easily apply next year and get into lot better places than you have been rejeted this year Or try getting a masters degree from your current University and then simply transfer(or apply) to good places next year.
I understand waiting for one more yr sucks, but hey, this is your home country; you can do what ever you like and stay where ever you like. Write a nice thesis and increase your GRE score by 100 points, then you will be good to go. Good luck.

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I am an international student, pursuing MS degree from state university of CA, I have master thesis, with more than one year of research experience in exp.condensed matter with one publication and other one coming soon, PGRE = 700,
I applied to six universities
UC Davis, Oregon state Univ, Univ of Texas, Univ of Idaho, Carnegie Mellon Univ, Univ of Columbia, rejected by all except Univ of Idaho who admitted me without funds and still waiting from Univ of texas. I chose all these universities by looking at my research interest. I was having hope to get in Davis, as I visited twice there, met with the Prof*s, first they all encourage me to apply and at the end, they kick me out, it sucks !!
Carnegie Mellon Univ, not accepting even a single international student this year due to funding constraint. It is difficult to get in UC's unless one have GRE score more than 900.
Anyway best of luck to all who still waiting to hear

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I also received an email from Maryland:
We have finished making offers of admission for the Fall 2008 semester. I am sorry to tell you that, despite your good credentials, you were not selected for an offer. We received 652 applications so that there were many difficult decisions to make. We were also trying for a smaller entering class than in recent years.
Oh well, I guess that means I have to go to Harvard or Cornell instead.

Well that's not exactly heart-breaking.samoa wrote:Oh well, I guess that means I have to go to Harvard or Cornell instead.
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I got rejected too, I am happy for Maryland for not choosing me cuz I'd decline them anyway like the way I declined UCSD. Oh man, it felt sooo good!
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I visited Brown this weenkend and they seemed to be pretty strong in cond matter exp and theory. However, I did not like Providence area. Totally crappy place, dilappidated buildings, was not like the US city, dirty streets, ugh.
So I am planning to attend two grad schools next year. My plan is : first semester Brown, 2nd semester Madison.
@ dlenmn:
There were like 4-5 students visiting the same weekend. It was like an openhouse although Brown did not have an offical openhouse.

Re: FALL 2008 rejections

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Well I sent it out. I will let you all know the results in the morning. I will say that my hopes are not high, but definitely non-zero.

That's funny you asked. NYU was one of my top choices, but I just today decided to accept another offer. The decision letter is in the mail, so hopefully you have a chance. Goodluck.

Was it UIUC, if you don't mind sharing?christopher3.14 wrote:Hey multigoal, multigoal wrote:@ Christopher3.14christopher3.14 wrote:Just got Berkeley rejection. Guess they're going out now.

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Sorry, really need to visit NYU on the 28th first, and then UCSB on the 3rd.
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
NYU already made decisions on my application.....The grad school will be sending postal mails, but they don't tell your status via email or phone........Does anybody know why is that?.....Is it due to the fact that these decisions are rejections?????....
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I finally received my rejection from Harvard SEAS...by mail, letter dated March 14 and postmarked March 18. Interestingly, the letter notes that "I know that this decision comes as a disappointment."
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
You guys were right, Linda at Maryland gave it to me straight:
*** lame.We have finished making offers of admission for the Fall 2008 semester.
I am sorry to tell you that, despite your good credentials, you were not
selected for an offer. You will receive
formal notification by mail from the Graduate School.

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Nothing's official yet, but I whittled it down to Columbia and UIUC. After talking to advisers, and having lived in a big city my whole life, and considering it was the largest financial offer, I'm pretty sure I'm going to Columbia. I'd say it's about 80%.hpharty wrote: I too am interested to know which school you decided on attending.
I still want to visit UIUC, though. It was my number one for a really long time -- and I didn't get in last time I applied -- so I still want to see it for myself first. But I love New York and have many friends that have moved there post-undergrad. I just think it's more my type of city, and I look forward to a smaller student body rather than a large one.
We'll see, though, maybe something crazy happens and I fall in love with UIUC.

The stipend may look big but I still can't even find a studio under $1300 in/around Morningside Heightschristopher3.14 wrote:Nothing's official yet, but I whittled it down to Columbia and UIUC. Ouch, good luck with that guys...you guys/gals could always be roommates
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
@ VT
Interesting. I recall that down town Providence was quite nice. The whole area used to be a whole lot more crappy and dilapidated but has improved a lot in the last 20 years or so.

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Did anyone who got into Arizona get a good financial package? I think I got the standard, and it seems really low!
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
They offered me around $1700 a month if I remember right. I think that's about standard. The cost of living in Tucson is lower than say, NYC, or Santa Barbara, so I wouldn't expect Arizona's stipend to be as high as Columbia or UCSB.
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
You think UCSB has a good stipend?!
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I wouldn't know, they rejected me. How much is it?
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Sigh... a little higher than Arizona's.
Re: FALL 2008 rejections

Do you have any updates about Syracuse?...

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Absolutely none. I guess that means I'm still waitlisted, but I'll let you guys know as soon as I do. As for you, and jdhooghe, I've officially decided I'm heading to the University of Florida (closest to home), so I'm turning down Syracuse even if I get it. At least that's one less person in the pool for you guys...multigoal wrote:@ gatr1126

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Just got my official rejection from Caltech by email. I definitely saw this one coming, so it hardly even stings at this point.

Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Second that, zxcv. I already got depressed over Caltech and got better. Except now I find myself depressed yet again, I've always wanted to go there. But with everybody at my undergrad telling me to go to Stanford and not Caltech, even if I did get in. So it's bittersweet, really. But that's it, I've heard from everywhere! I'm done. Time to DECIDE! =D
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
At Wisc-Madison, you find fully furnished two bed room apt with swimming pool and small gymnasium for $700 per month!!What a city! On top of that, there are like 50 restuarants from all over the world very close to these apts!
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
Yep, I think I had already convinced myself that I'd rather be at Berkeley anyways. And indeed, it's my last rejection: time to decide!
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I got my rejection letter from Harvard today.
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I rejected Minnesota today. Now I think I shud be accepted to UIUC to balance things up.
Re: FALL 2008 rejections
I wish UIUC would just say something. Damn.
Watch them send letters on April 16.
