2019 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

2019 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results

Postby supermario42 » Fri Sep 21, 2018 1:34 am

This is the most useful resource PhysicsGRE has to offer. If you have used this information in the past or are currently using it to help decide upon schools, I highly suggest you help out and post your own profile once you have applied to schools. Future members of this forum will find it very useful! Don't be shy!

Copy and paste the template below in your reply to keep the formatting.

Undergrad Institution: Big top 10 Public School.
Majors: Physics B.S., Mathematics B.S.
Overall GPA: 3.51
GPA in Physics: 3.49
GPA in Math:3.59 (only 3/11 non A's)
Length of Degree: 4 years
Position in Class: Idk
Type of Student: Domestic mixed minority male.

GRE Scores :
Q: 165 (88%)
V: 159 (83%)
W: TBA
P: TBA (probably very low)

Research Experience:
- 1 year assisting prof doing data analysis on equipment tests for Fermilab.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Deans List Spring 2018.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs:
- Private Math tutor (and a little physics) for 3 years
- Math tutor at school's Teaching Center for the past semester.
- Learning assistant for intro Calc at my school.

Special Bonus Points: Taking Graduate Classical Mechanics and Graduate Mathematical Physics.

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Got second highest midterm grade in class on recent grad mechanics exam, impressed prof since I was an undergrad and he offered to write me letter of rec. Imagine it will be strong as he says I "have talent". He's also involved in QG which is my primary research interest (welp) so maybe that will help.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: One of my recommenders is a prof who doesn't really remember me and agreed to write me a letter but said "it won't help much". Also going to mention serious family issues that affected my ability to study for GRE. Also due to issues at my high school and at my college that were not my fault, I wasn't allowed to take any physics courses until my sophomore year of undergrad so that really set me back and put me at a disadvantage compared with students who had a background. I jumped into physics w calc 1 as my first ever physics course and did not do well.

Undergrad Institution: small but well known science and liberal arts college in India
Major(s): Physics
GPA in Major: we did not have a GPA system, and writing absolute percentages here will not make a lot of sense.
Length of Degree: 3 years
Position in Class: Near top
Type of Student: International Indian Female

Second Undergrad \ MS Institution: top UK uni with a collegiate system
Major(s): Physics
GPA in Major: First class honors (The British follow the class system)
Length of Degree: 2 years
Position in Class: no way to know, but top quarter?

GRE Scores : (revised version)
Q: TBD
V: TBD
W: TBD
P: Sept 2018 - 920 (86%) -- not happy about this :( .Oct 2018 - TBD

TOEFL: (R: , L: , S: , W: ) Not required.

Research Experience:
- Research in Soft matter physics (2 months)
- Research in foundation of quantum physics (2 months)
- Research in CMT/many body physics (2 months + 2.5 months + master's thesis (an effectively 3 month thing at my uni in the UK))

Awards/Honors/Recognitions:
- some academic awards at my undergrad college in India
- major scholarships at the UK uni
- UK college award for academic performance

Pertinent Activities or Jobs:
- presently a TA at this upcoming uni in India.

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: -
a publication (which needs revision and re-communication though, is not in CMT or QMBD though, was on astro), have taken and done well (enough?) on graduate level courses.

Special Bonus Points: -
took two years out during my master's years, battled mental health issues, but came back with a bang. I am 25 and hoping to do a PhD -- don't know if that will be looked upon as favourably though. :P

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: -

Applying to Where (All theory):

Still deciding between CMT and Soft matter/Biophysics -- so have not shortlisted yet. Will update.

Overall GPA: 3.97
Length of Degree: 5 years
Position in Class: near top? don't really know
Type of Student: domestic white male

GRE Scores :
Q: 170
V: 170
W: 6
P: 970

Research Experience: 3 months at a government lab doing nonlinear optics simulations
6 months at a small research lab doing biomedical optics - three conference publications, one first author, and one journal publication
6 month at CERN working on detector engineering
5 months at a government lab doing AMO for quantum information - one conference publication and probably another first-author one
3 months at a university doing simulations of ultracold atomic systems

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: dean's list every semester, honors program, full-tuition scholarship, best poster in physics at another university's symposium, multiple conference travel grants, grant for semester of research

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: five semesters as a lab TA, one year as SPS Vice President, five years of writing and editing popular science articles

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help:

Special Bonus Points: applying to work with people that one of my PI knows well, another recommender is very well known within high energy

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: organized a directed study in quantum information and attended USEQIP

Applying to Where:

UMD - Physics - AMO/QI
UC Berkeley - Physics - AMO/QI
