Can I get one from a math professor even though I am applying to do experiment?

what is he going to write for you? if you were in a research with him and he can write about your motivations and skills that would work. but if an A grade in calculus is the only point he wants to make that letter can't be an effective letter.

I did a summer of applied math research (simulation type stuff) and got a letter from the prof I worked for. I was accepted to several top schools so seems to have worked out for me. Like the previous poster said, I think the key is whether or not research was involved.
