Only offered funding for first year?

Funding is subject to renewal on an academic yearly basis, and depends on the students overall graduate performance.

It was probably explicitly stated like this in the letter for legal reasons.

That seems strange. I was accepted to UNH, and while they included the "contingent upon performance..." sentence, they guaranteed funding for four years. I would email/call to clarify.

This is not a big deal. In many states, it is illegal to offer funding more than a year in advance (for public universities). At some places, they'll unofficially guarantee you a couple of years TA at least, but then you need to find a research advisor with funding--so they can't make long term promises. If in doubt, call and ask. Simply ask if any students in good standing have had to leave because of lack of funding.
