jounal publication in signal processing.

currently i am an undergraduate student majoring in electronics.....with a strong taste in physics (more of theoretical).
there is this question over which i have been itching my head for quiet a long time now......
Does a journal paper publication in signal processing going to help me in resume for graduate admissions in applied physics ?
It may indeed seem a bit awkward, but it is on the basis of my available resouces and possibility, that i am saying.
